Default Paging EvilTwin about WarrantyDirect (again)

They have been sending me emails for a while now and this one seems to contridict one of the things that you told me. "While you can purchase your coverage at almost anytime, the cost for coverage rises as your vehicle ages and accrues mileage. In other words, you will be offered the longest term at the lowest rate for a new vehicle.

Let's look at a real world example. A 2004 GM vehicle is purchased on 10/1/04. She is typical of most Americans and drives between 13-14,000 miles per year. The driver is interested in covering the vehicle for as long as possible; in other words, she wants to extend her warranty from 3 years/36,000 miles to 7 years/100,000 miles. The chart below illustrates the cost of waiting based on 2004 rates. Rates are likely to rise in the future.. (Costs will be a bit lower for Japanese cars and higher for SUVs, trucks and luxury cars)

Buy coverage on
or about this date Mileage on vehicle Longest term offered Coverage expires... Cost Cost of waiting
October 2004 1,000 7 years/100,000 miles October 2011 or 100,000 miles $1,000 none
October 2005 14,000 6 years/100,000 miles October 2011 or 100,000 miles $1,200 or more $200 or more
October 2006 28,000 5 years/100,000 miles October 2011 or 100,000 miles $1,450 or more $450 or more
Just before warranty expires, May 2007 35,000 4 years/100,000 miles May 2011 or 100,000 miles $1,575 or more $575 or more
Vehicle out of warranty 36,000 or more miles 4 years/100,000 miles depends on purchase date $1,799 or more $799 or more

A common misconception is that by waiting, you will get coverage for a longer time. The charts above and below illustrate why that is not so. It's like life insurance, the older you are, the more costly the coverage."
I think I'll call them tomorrow.

at the end of my 3 year warranty, while still under factory warranty. I got 7 years 100,000 miles with zero deductable.. which in essence gave me 10 years 100,000 with zero deducatable.. all for 1200 dollars.. 200 down and 100 dollars for the next 10 months, no interest..that was 2001...my car was bought dec 1998... this was their best plan...lets go look and see what the cost for their best plan is today 3 years later.. lets see just how much it has actually gone up..
You have to understand I have nothing to do with Warranty Direct...I dont know prices..I just point people in their direction because as a company, they are terrific..
Many people have gone with them on my recommendations.. obviously those people dont blindly buy this warranty.. they must to some comparision shopping.. so they must still be competative.. AS far as Warranty Direct delivering what they say.,,,, they are the best.,..
I dont know what the pricing is....
I do know this... if you have a new car and have a warranty.. I would never pay twice for one warranty.. its the original reason I didnt go with GMPP... they give you an extended warranty which runs concurrant with the oem warranty..I wouldnt have two warranties..because I know IM covered for three years... no worries other than dealing with dealers.... I dont know what the situation will be 3 years from now .. If I misled you in anyway...IM sorry...(I know the company is good... ) you have to do the math...three years ago I did the math and what I did gave me the best advantage...

Sorry for the one week delay in answering your last post on this. I spoke with WD and it seems like they no longer go the 7 years out after the 3 year warranty. The way I understand it is that they shave 1 year off for every 1 year older your car is and they charge you a bit more than if you bought it sooner. They also end at 100,000 miles on the odometer. Their prices also go up as the mileage when you buy the policy goes up. I'm not bitching, it all seems fair enough. I also want to thank you for your help. I never meant to imply that you misguided me. In fact, if it weren't for your posts I probably would have bought GMPP and then would get nothing but the great service of the local Chevy dealerships. WD gave me the names of many local repair shops and dealerships that gladly deal with them. I will call a few of them and then buy my warranty. Thanks, Tom
