Default Z06 1-4 Shift. Basic Question!!!!

I've seen posts about the annoying 1-4 shift and ways to eliminate it. But, my simple question is, WHY was the transmission designed to do that? I saw here someone wrote its for no other reason "other than CAFE standards." What does that mean, if it's true? So why is the Skip feature there, and not in any other car I've ever seen?

It lets GM bypass the gas-guzzler tax on our cars and get a better CAFE (corporate average fuel economy) rating. I'd mauch rather pay $20 to eliminate it than $2000 tax. IMHO, it's a good move on GM's part.

During the development of the ZR1 GM was looking to bypass the gas guzzler tax and not affect CAFE ratings. The engineers realzied that the car had plenty of grunt to operate from 1 to 4 under "light load conditions" and that would allow the car to recieve a better EPA city rating. However, the EPA requires that the car must be designed to operate in this way, not just by operation. Meaning, Joe Six-Pack has to do the 1 to 4 shift as well, and not because he read about it in the owners manual. So they incorporated a solenoid into the design that would, under predetermined conditions, cause the vehicle to go straight to 4th gear during light acceleration. It's worked like a charm for them ever since.

I definitely prefer doing the $20 CAGS disable, then paying the gas guzzler tax.... Yes it can be annoying if you do not get rid of it, but I applaud GM for keeping it out of the gas guzzler tax...

So how come on a dodge viper you have to pay a gas guzzler tax, and it also has the 1 to 4 shift??

and better yet, no need to spend anything, just drive the car like a Corvette and that thing will NEVER get in your way.

Don't shift the car into 2nd before 1500 rpm's and it will never bother anyone. No one should be shifting that soon anyway...............

The now-defunct F-body cars had the skip-shift as well.

That could have something to do with it Then again I don't understand why a car would have it if it didn't get them past the tax.

I TOTALLY agree!!! Glenn is right - just a little extra throttle and the thing never gets in the way. What fun is it to shift from 1st to 2nd at about 14 mph anyway? Work it baby!!

Hi Glenn!

Did you ever stop to think that maybe it would have been even HIGHER if they didn't?
