It can be patched or plugged, as long as it is not in the sidewall. I've had both and replaced the tires because of the sidewall puncture. The tire repair place I went to would not use a plug and contended they were not good. They specified patch only.
Find a Discount Tire if they are in your area. The proper fix is to dismount the tire and install a combination patch/plug from the inside. This keeps the speed rating of the tire. Patch fixes the leak, plug then seals the hole so the belts can't corrode from any moisture. If the tire has less than 12 months use on it, then the Goodyear new car warrenty will have the repair done for free at a Goodyear Store. This is in the Goodyear Warrenty Card. DT usually does repair for free. At least they have for me. Of course, if tire is worn, you can just plug the hole from the outside with a standard repair cord.
