OK, so it turns out my car has a Vortex on it. What do I need to know to check/change the air filter? I figured I would ask people that know instead of just randomly unscrewing things.

To get you started here are two links that discuss the performance and the installation of the Vortex. This will help with understanding what you have.
According to the write up, the author indicates that you may need to take out the 6 main bolts to check, change the filter. See the excerpt in bold from the article below.
Now the down side. The only way I see to replace the air cleaner is remove the 6 bolts that hold the whole kit together or maybe from underneath? The vendor doesn't say. Each has its own disadvantage but I think I'll try underneath first, but that may take 2 people.
Hope this helps. I don't have this filter installed but I'm sure someone who does will chime in with some more detail.
It's pretty easy if you have a jack and a powered screwdriver. Just jack up the front enough so that you can reach the filter from below. Loosen the clamp on the filter, then coax the filter out from the bottom.
You need the powered screwdriver for re-installation. Bear-hug the front bumper as you use one hand to guide the filter up the bottom, and use your other hand to to operate the screwdriver.

I just cleaned mine a few days ago. Simply loosen the hose clamp above the airbox. Reach up to the filter from the bottom and maneuver it out. It's a tight fit but it comes out just fine with no damage. I cleaned mine and recharged it using a K&N kit and reinstalled it in the reverse process that I removed it.
