The stiffness can be adjusted (didn't you get directions with the shifter?) but it doesn't make much difference; maybe over time it will loosen up. But I love the feel of my new Hurst shifter; it has taken my enjoyment of driving my vette to a new level.
I HATED mine and I've used plenty of short throw shifters. I'm a strong guy and I found the stiffness to be completely unacceptable and I adjusted it as much as possible.
The B&M short throw was a significant improvement over the hurst, but I may have just had a dud.
Paid 173 shipped from jegs. took about an hour. instructions that came with it are not bad but there is a thread on the forum with pics that helps a lot.
Question - did you use the stock boot or purchase one that fits better? I will be soon installing my Hurst, and I didn't know if I should invest in a better fitting boot. Right now I don't think I will, but if it is really needed to make the job look perfect, I will. I just don't want to take this thing apart twice.
how much did the new shifter cost and how long did it take you to remove and replace?
I finally got around to installing mine today as well. I started at 9:30 this morning and everything went wrong. I ended up destroying the key trying to get it out and my only alternative was to saw the shifter shaft to get the **** off. Then my girlfriend and I broke up. Then I dropped a screw down in the tunnel. After running out to the parts store to get one of those flexible parts grabber thingy's and getting the screw out the installation went fairly smoothly. Finished up around 3:00PM.
Now I find out I gotta remove the exhaust tips to install the Exhaust Plate.
Oh well...I'll get to that before I head up to Chicago next weekend to see my friends and family and show off the new ride.
I got an aftermarket shift **** on now and it looks cool and works beautifully.

Used the stock boot. Looks good to me. I'll try to post a pic of it.
By your picture showing both the stock and short boots, it looks like the lower portion of the stock boot could be trimmed to the length of the short boot. I can't tell if the shortened stock boot would have enough material left, around its perimeter, to attach to the boot mount though. What do you think? If you think the stock boot could be modified, approximately how much would have to be removed to match the short one?
PS Thank you for the detailed install info.

Though you may be able to shorten the stock boot I would hesitate to do so...It really does look OK with the stock boot and the short shifter.

You might be able to shorten it a bit but be careful. The diameter of the boot will decrease as you cut a section from the bottom because of it's conical shape and you probably won't be able to pull it over the ring. I suggest either using the stock boot unmodified or buy a VE boot which is cut to fit the stock ring.
