Default Cranking Time to Start

Sometimes my Z takes about 2 or 3 seconds of cranking time to start. My auto coupe always started instantly. Is this normal? It's brand new, so i doubt it's fuel pump.

My '04 Z picked up in June generally starts within a second or 2 tops. Most time its instantly, but others there might be that second or 2 of delay. It probably depends on moisture in the system or time sitting, etc. Unfortunately mine is not garaged, which is why I suspect moisture may be involved on those slightly harder to startup times. During those times, it seems like its not going to start, then all of a sudden it does ! Is that what you are experiencing ?

Give this a try- turn your key to "on" wait til the CORVETTE appears in the DIC and then try to start her up. Gives the fuel pump a chance to pressurize if sitting for a while or cold. My 01 Z06 has the 1-2 sec crank syndrome and this helps alot!

Actually, that's what i normally do. Doesn't seem to help. Wonder if it could be the fuel pressure regulator??

I would do a fuel pressure test at the Schader valve on the fuel rail. Should be 58-62 lbs running at idle.

But in this case, shouldn't i test it with engine off after sitting overnight??

i have a 94 lt1 car, and notice something similar.....it can sometimes take several seconds for the car to start...it cranks stong, but wont turn over for the first couple secs....

i notice this is worse when the car is hot (like driving it to the gas station, turning it off, then back on to leave)

the car sits outside at work, but is garaged on weekends and at night.

i checked the fuel press. when the car is at idle and also driving around and its all reading what it should...

could the fuel pressure regulator be letting fuel out as the car sits over night? so that when you go to start the car the next time, it has to 're-fill' the fuel rail while its cranking till the press. is enough for it to start?

also on the end of the fuel pressur regulator, it looks like there is a nipple on the end of it that would be for a vacumme line, it runs from the FPR to the intake manifold....but when i pulled it off...gas shot out at me.

what to do

once the car is started it runs fine.

i was gonna start with the FPR and replace it with a OEM part. see if that helps...

any ideas?

I let the DIC play its "Corvette By Chevrolet" banner before cranking. If you don't put your seat belt on before cranking, it is three to four bongs of the seatbelt warning.

While my Z06 does not crank as quickly as my wife's Lexus, it does fire up in a reasonable time (two to three seconds).

Mine starts almost instantaneously. Justlikethat. Every time. All conditions.

So I wonder why there would be any variation from car to car, year to year. You would think we'd all be in the same boat. Strange.

Would fuel quality have anything to do with it?

Mine just started doing this a few days ago, I thought maybe it was because it sat for about a week while I was out of town. But I've been driving it consistently now for a few days and it still does it. I then thought it may have to do with the dealer re-flashing my computer to stock so I've lost my custom programming, I'll try going to "ON" and then cranking though.

I have had regulators go on a 95 and 85 and it did the same thing...car took a little while to start. It kept getting worse and worse.

Agree- I was suspect with my 2001 Z06 of either a leaking fuel injector or a defective regulator (built into the fuel pump in the tank!) Mine checked out fine. You will notuce a slight drop overnight, but as we've been discussing, the "wait period upon turning the key to on" will allow the fuel pump to charge the system. As said, I am not losing any sleep over this one considering the "crap" gas we are getting in the Northeast and my mileage is off better than 10% any how!
