If I remember correctly, Bill Clinton (Mr. Oral Office), had a Mustang of some kind or another at one time.

While in comparision, didn't Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker) star in a God aweful, low budget flick called "Corvette Summer"? (Yah, okay, so I am showing my age a little.) And talk about a "riced" out Corvette...

The point being...it's not the car that matters, it's the owner or driver who is either a good guy or a jerk.

My DD is a 2003 Ford Ranger, if that says anything.

My Daily Driver is a mildly modified (wheels/tires/suspension/slammed with stock everything else) 2000 Ricer

And I have owned (over the years) :

1975 Nissan B210 with an oddfire Buick V6/NOS stuffed into it - high 11sec/quarter
1967 Mercury Cougar XLR with Ford 460 BB - high 11sec/quarter
1972 (Australian) Ford Falcon 500 with a TT Chevy 468 BB (same car as in Mad Max 1 & 2) - very low 10sec/quarter
1982 Mercedes 500SEL with a Chevy 468 BB stuffed into it - mid 11sec/quarter
1999 Ford Mustang GT 5.0L with perf. mods - never raced it but it was very quick and fun to drive

And I own a 2001 C5 Coupe now and I am in absolute love with this car.

I love all cars and I get EXTREMELY strange looks when I wave at other Vette owners from my Daily Driver Ricer, let me tell you...

Just this morning, I passed a Mill. yellow coupe and waved - and he looked at me like I was from Mars...

So what does it matter what others think?

Enjoy your car and enjoy your life.

My .02 cents.

This is much, much more important that many let on. For us older guys you are either a GM guy, a Ford guy, or a MOPAR guy (any other make and you do't even qualify as one of the guys). My father was a GM guy and I am a GM guy (I did buy a new Ford once, a turbo TBird, and it quickly sent me back to the GM only ranks). When I started driving in the early 60's it was either Ford or GM as Chrysler products were as rare and obscure as Nash Ramblers, Studebakers and Packards; only in the late 60's and early 70's did MOPAR products get any respect and then mainly through drag racing.

Further, Ford was a complete joke during the entire muscle car era, or for that matter the 50's, 60's and 70's (and to me since). Chevy & Pontiac small and big blocks ruled the street until cars like the GTX (the 440 six pack was strong, hemis were a joke - pure myth) came along - no self respecting street racer would demean himself by smoking a Mustang - it would be like beating up someone half your size.

There have always been and always will be limited production exotics and specialty shop products, and they simply do not count. I have never seen a Shelby Cobra on the street, original, reproduction or new. I did know a guy with a Ford GT40 (?) much the same as the new ones, but it was slow and way overrated. Even the Viper has to be considered an exotic.

If the owner of a Yugo starts saying his car is faster, or whatever more than a Vette; I'll dispute him, and the same goes for the owner of any Ford product.

I agree to a point. That's why you will find that I tended to transplant GM motors (primarily 454 Big Blocks bored .030 over with TH400s) into most of my cars. The Ford motors just didn't cut it for me.

But you can still love all performance cars - even if you are on the other side of the fence (GM vs. Ford vs. Mopar vs. Ricer etc. etc. etc.)

I've had 'em all and I don't regret any one of them.

But I LOVE my Vette!!!!

England ... I had a 1976 Datsun B210 that I bought new during one of the gas crunches of the day. It had no options ... just a radio ... and no air conditioner (which in Alabama is certainly not a luxury). I think it cost about $2600, which would be considerably more today with inflation. I didn't put a Buick V-6 in it ... just kept the 1300 cc engine that came with it. Amusingly, it's 0-60 time was probably about 20 seconds, and it's quarter might've been close to a minute.

What's funny is, its gas mileage was only marginally better than what I get in my Vette, which has an engine over 4 times the displacement, and all the luxuries and speed that we all know about. Technology has changed in those nearly 30 years.

RocketDawg,

Things have certainly come a L-O-N-G way in 30 years!!

I originally started just modding the 1200cc Datsun engine (Webber DOHC carbs, higher compression, side exhaust with spark plug, resonator et al.) and I got it to run 17.63 sec/quarter.

At that point the V6 was stuffed into it - had to cut away the entire firewall and build a new one to fit it - plus the headers had to be reversed to go FORWARDS and then backwards in order to fit the engine bay...

Ah, yes!! Those were the days before Cats, clean air, noise polution and cops on every corner waiting to ticket you for being a red blodded male in the 70's

Love my Vette though - wouldn't trade it for a world of nostalgia!

That is why I bought the Z06. I still have my Mach 1 and love it. The Cobra ran a 12.57 in the 1/4 mile and the Z06 has run a best of 12.55. Seems pretty close in a straight line. It was a warmer day when I ran the Cobra. I will say I think I can get a bit more out of the Z06.

Someone said "it is still a Ford."
If you say it is still a Ford. Then the Corvette is still a Chevy. A Mustang is an American icon. So is the Corvette. They both have thier place in history and both are great cars.

Sorry to hear so many of you hate Mustangs. I am wondering what you will do if Chevy ever decides to stop making the Corvette. Don't say it can't happen. That is what the F-Body guys always said.

Love my Corvette and love my Mustang..

I too am a true fan of any cool vehicle, which also includes two wheelers. Used to get into this thing all the time with my Harley and kids on the hot rice burners. They would dog me about being able to blow my doors off. When I got fed up I would simply state, "you know, one day I'm going to sell this bike and use the money to buy two or three of those (pointing)." Most amusing to watch their reaction. May have some application here.

I agree about the cost of parts. I've had several Corvettes over the years and am proud to have a new 04 C5. What has been a shock is the cost of mods for the Vette now. I have been on a mission to mod it for less. The Ford guys have an advantage, of that there is no doubt. We are part of the problem though, because we pay these inflated prices.
