You can also hire companies to go inspect it on your behalf - cost ~$200.
But the most important thing is run a CARFAX on any car you are buying - even if you have seen and driven it yourself. You would be amazed at the amount of solid info you can glean from a CARFAX report - service history, # of owners, crashes, failed/passed inspection (good indicator if it has been modded) etc. etc. etc.
And no, I do not work for CARFAX!!
My .02 cents

When I bought my car last year - I bought it from a private party in the Chicago area and I live in Phoenix. I used AutomobileInspections.com at the recommendation of Captain Ken at the Vette Net. I got a 6 page report and about 40 pics. It was a very thorough report. It cost me $300.
If you have the VIN of the car you are considering, I would strongly suggest that you get a service history report on the car. It will give you all of the pertinent information on the car, including which dealer originally ordered the car, it's original in-service date, status of any remaining warranty, the build date, original options as ordered, and maybe most importantly it will be a record of all work performed under warranty. CF Member Sponge Vette has generously run what seems like hundreds of these for other CF members - so you might consider contacting him - or have your local friendly Chevrolet run it for you.
CAR-FAX in my opinion is of limited value. It's only as good as the information that was reported to it. I would run it, but I wouldn't place all my faith in it.

Many forum members have done this and it seems to work well. You just have to understand that your idea of an ideal car and someone else's may be slightly different. The tips blacksedan87 and EnglandGreen are very good and could save you a lot of problems down the road.
