Hello all. I haven't had my factory recall work done on my 1997 yet and from what I've heard all the dealership does is disable the system (I think). What is the/a CLB? How much do they cost and are they worth it?

The CLB is worth it. I would get the recall done first though before installing it. If you have an auto, then a plate is installed to disable the pin from engaging. For the manual equipped cars, they reflash the PCM to allow for fuel shutoff in the event of a lock and they check to see if the pin is aligned correctly. The column will still lock and in some cases the recall has failed to correct the problem in the manual cars.
I got my CLB from Thunder Racing. Cost was about $60 shipped.
If you have an Auto tranny, get the latest recall - GM provides a harness that will bypass the column lock and prevent it from locking.
If you have a Manual tranny, the CLB is the only sure way to prevent the lock from getting you. The recalls will only change the logic in BCM that cuts fuel when the lock is stuck, but will not prevent you from getting stuck.
i never had a problem, period. Then when our club was meeting for a parade, it engaged WHILE I was driving through the parking lot. Scared the sh#t out of me. The recall was done, but I also had a bad motor, which was not part of the recall. This little unpleasant incident cost me $397.
CLB does not always work for 97-98 cars. So, careful. If you goto the dealership it will cost around 475. I got mine done a few months ago and the exact thing you need to get done is called an Auto trans lock plate.

I have a 2000 vette. Automatic.
Mine locked up about two weeks ago.
I was able to get it loose and drove it to the dealership. They checked it out and told me that they do not see any problems or error codes. I guess it's fine.
I'm not sure if they should have done something else since it was with them.???
My vette did have the first recall completed 8/01.
