Ok, so it may have looked funny going down the road , but it sure worked. A buddy of mine drove out here from Orange County, CA to Albuquerque a few days ago, and this is what I saw when he pulled into the garage. He was unhappy with how the bra covered the front of his vette, and he wanted something with more coverage. My father in law told him the when he transports his cars to car shows, he takes painters tape, (delicate) and covers the parts of his cars that he knows will be in danger of getting hit with rocks.
It worked like a charm. Not a single scratch on his car, and it stayed in the car at 145mph. The tape pulled right off, leaving no residue or tape lines. Just something to think about for those who want to take there cars on a long cross country trip! Total about of tape seen here was 1 roll. When he took off, we put the tape right back on... and he said he got the same results when he got her back home, worked like a charm. Here are some pics...
better tape the windshield to prevent rock chip ,,,,I feel this is a little to **** , I would feel pretty funny driving a car with tape all over it,,might as well not drive it at all

a little less obvious way would have been to use clear, removeable shelf liner...I suddenly feel very normal Perhaps he should have just covered the whole car for consistency
Looks like a ribbed condomr...Better unroll it the rest of the way down the car....
I thought I was **** with my 3m film - got me beat! I think I'd just get an enclosed trailer.
No doubt it would work. But, I am not sure I would want to spend a Xcountry trip explaining it at every stop! Black was probably not the best color for him!
hmmmm way to **** for me. I like driving my car and not worrying about taping it up. Get a bra I have driven many time from Chicago to Albuquerque, but I just used a bra. Taping up it up as much as he did is just nuts. Cleartastic works great and you don't have to look like a raving looney with tape strewn in all sorts of places all over your car.
I'm planning on trailering mine down to Florida and I was wondering how I could protect it without having to spend a bucket of money on a car cover I'd use one time. This looks like a good alternative. Thanks
If you were trailering the car, on an open trailer, the tape would be a great idea,,,but to drive around with it on the car,,well.....cleartastic is the way to go...or buy two vettes , one to drive , one to admire...
Hmmm, let me think about that for a second....should I spend $6.00 for the tape or should I go ahead and drop the $37,000 for a truck and a trailer?????
Jeez...thats a tough one, I just cant make up my mind.
The painters tape is a great trick. I've used it on my car going to and from car shows and have covered all of the areas that are likely to take rock damage, there isnt anything wrong with that.
If you have a trailer, fine. If not, this is a very good way to protect your car.
When people get bashed for posting ideas, they tend not to post anymore. I think we all lose at that point, because who knows, the next one might be the gem we have been looking for. Some ideas may seem foolish to some, but others might really get a kick out of it.
Thanks for the idea MSD44. Don't plan on using it personally, but keep em coming!
