Got my asbestos suit on. Why don't they make 2 piece rims that separate to make it easier to install and remove the runflat tire and pressure sensor. I'm sure it is easy enough to seal the two halfs to hold air. Is it just a weight issue?
There is a company out there making a 2 piece carbon fiber & magnesium wheel. They weigh 14lbs each. They are very expensive but cost is relative in the pursuit of performance.
wow those carbon fibor one's look really nice. Unlikely that a run flat could be forced onto that without breaking it. Could you imagine your tire garage getting a wheel like that to mount. They'd freek out. Oh well. Be well all.
I always wondered why you don't see more performance titanium wheels since its so strong, yet lightweight. Forget the cost, there are people who will spend 15k on a set of wheels that spin and weigh 100 pounds.
One of the reasons I'm still on the fence about getting aftermarket wheels is because of the added unsprung weight that most aftermarket wheels add.
Split rims were used by the trucking industry for years. After resulting in countless deaths during changing they finally did away with them. For those few remaining - it requires that the wheel/tire be put in a cage before separation.
