Default Is the HUD really worth it?

Well ideally I would like to buy a 99 black/black hard top M6 vette, but finding that is getting hard, and sometimes expensive. I was searching around this forum and found that only 483 99's had the HUD, so finding exactly what I want is very slim.

Well I picked up a million of the free car sales magazines, and theres one called auto focus thats all color, half cars and half trucks/suv's. And its basically all dealership items.

Well theres a black/black hardtop in there, and its a 98. says all power options, leather, ect. Doesnt say how many miles or what trans it has, so ill be calling after lunch today to find out, but the car is $18,900.

So if it had acceptable miles, and was a 6 speed, should I just say forget the HUD and go check it out? ive never had a HUD or even seen one so I wouldnt be missing anything, except a neat toy.

There were no hardtops (FRC or Fixed Roof Coupe) in '98, and all hardtops are MN6. It must be a misprint. For the price, if the miles aren't sky high and it has a clear title, then I'd say go for it and add the HUD later. From what I've read, it is not too terribly difficult to add the HUD to a Corvette. In fact, I'll be you can find out a bunch by doing a search for it.

BTW, I love the HUD on my '00 FRC. I really like never having to take my eyes off the road.

I have the HUD in my 2003. At first I thought it would just be in the way on the windshield, but now that I have it, I love it.

Makes it a lot safer keeping your eyes on the road and still knowing how fast, etc. you are going.

You'll get diametrically opposed views as to whether HUD is worth having or not. I personally love it. But don't let that one feature - or absence of it - be a deal maker/breaker for you. It's easily added by you or a mechanically-inclined friend (which there are many here on the forum, lucky for you ).

Here's a link to Josh's (HurricaneZ) web page tutorial on adding a HUD to a non-HUD C5.

I love the MPH function on the HUD. I rarely use the other HUD features. Could I live without it? Sure- every other car I've owned did not have HUD. But a convenience once experienced becomes a necessity. Good luck with your decision.

It's cool to have, but don't let it make or break your deal.

Good luck

If you never had it you will not miss it.

If you have had it then you will most likely want it back - kind of like the arrows on the V1....

While the HUD is a great feature that you'd come to enjoy and use, it shouldn't be a show stopper. If you find a mint low mileage 98 that suits your fancy those BIG SEXY analog gauges work just fine.

Take a look

BTW for $100 you can easily add the bezels and steering wheel decal which add so much more cache to those BIG SEXY gauges. And at night the bezels glow purple and look even more SEXY.

So don't let the lack of a HUD deter you.

I have it in my 03,I use it but it would not make my decision either way get the car if it has low miles and a clear title-I would not get the car if your decision was based on that you could add it later,it costs alot of money and time, and I bet it would never look the same,it's just not worth it (IMO)...

Are you sure? im not vette guru but by the looks of this picture it doesnt have the hatchback style window (I hate the look of it, no offence, I like the z06 style window) but its at an angle to which I could be wrong.

guess that might be one more thing I have to ask about.

Coupe was released in '97, convertible in '98 and the FRC in '99.

Oh, the Z06 in '01.

Check out this link for a production summary.

So I guess I have to get a 99 then? maybe ill get lucky and it will be a misprint but I doubt it.

How come when I searched model differences a guy said he had a 98 hardtop? I can get his name if needed, he was lying I guess?

I have a 99 with HUD, cool at first, now its off most of the time.
Don't let this keep you from buying a great vette.
Good luck !

I have a HUD in my Vette and my previous Grand Prix had one too. I'm addicted to it. It has to be the most used feature on my car, next to the gas pedal that is.

You'll get opinions both ways. If you have a great deal on a great car, I would not let the lack of HUD stop me. 2003 Convertible - Don't have it, Don't miss it.

I could live w/o the HUD w/o issue if I hadn't grown so used to it. Now that I've had it though, I couldn't buy another Corvette w/o it.

I don't really realize how much I use the HUD until I drive a car without it. When I drive my wife's Suburban I am constantly looking for the HUD display and am surprised when it's not there. But then I've had the HUD in 4 different C5s. Kinda get used to it after a while. But. if you have never had it before, you wouldn't miss it.
