Default Headlight Question

With hood open, looking at the side view of the headlight units, I notice on 1 there is a 2 inch black plastic disc and on the other side a 2 inch hole( drivers side) that when you look into it there are some type of nut and bolt.

Why are there these access holes?

Am I missing the disc on 1 side?

thanks
Dave

You guessed it on both counts.

Those are access holes to get to the mechanicals and you are missing one. The bad news is that GM changed the design (I think it was for the 99 model year) and you'll have very little if any luck at the dealership finding the disc for the 97. Someone one the forum may have one laying around that they would provide. I ended up buying the current model surrounds (which come with plugs) and replacing mine. They are a direct fit. I had lost both covers. The new design plugs stay in much better anyway.

I need some of those myself, so suggested sellers would be awesome!

go to home deopt and pick up 2 very large plastic "christmas tree" plug. then cut off the fastener part, and glue the top on to the bezel.

this is ow I fixed my missing plug. stupid GM wanted to charge me 16.99 for a new bezel, and 3.73 for a plug.

all the plugs do is cover up the aiming mech. and if I need to change something, I'll just take off the whole bezel anyway.

Now for the 2nd part of your question. Inside the hole you'll find two rods with what looks like a torx end on them. They are torx and you'll need a female torx to fit them. I used an ordinary 6 point socket but the torx socket works much better. One adjusts lights up and down and the other side to side. There doesn't seem to be too much adjustment so be careful you don't strip the adjuster when adjusting.
