I am putting headers(B&B Shorties)on this weekend and am going to replace the plugs while in there.....which plugs are the best? My engine is stock and do not plan to modify it.....anytime soon anyway . Also I heard I need a swivel wrench, has anyone used the Craftsman, will it do the job? Thanks
NGK TR55 (gap .055"-.060") is a very popular replacement plug. You can use a combo of swivel adapters to get you to plug no. 7 (driver rear) with relative ease. It's always easier to install the driver's side with the coil packs and AIR tube out of the way. Since you're doing headers, that shouldn't be a problem. Torque the plugs to 11 lb. ft. Btw, here's the double swivel plug socket I got from Snap-on. At $40+ though, it's an optional luxury.
Also, save yourself a headache and pull the coolant temp sensor out of the front/side of the driver's head before doing the headers. The minor coolant spill is worth the trouble of not breaking that sensor and having to get another.
Well, doing it with the exhaust manifold out of the way will make it easier!! Just becareful when pulling the shorties into position so you dont crack a plug. The #7 drivers side is the PITA but with the manifold outta the way you won't need any swivel. I went with NGK TR55's, but there are a lot of opinions on this just like exhausts, intakes, headers..... you get the idea!! Do a seach on plugs and see what you come up with!
Alright Patches....first thanks as always for your expertise on our cars BUT the real question is...WHAT DO YOU DO FOR A LIVING, you are always answering the posts so quick?!??! I want your job.
Really though, thanks!
I pulled the plugs last weekend and they were a true PITA. I think I used every type of swivel and extension in my tool box. I started to do the 11ft.lb torque but gave up because of the swivels. I just did them up "tight" enough.
