Sorry for on this whole battery tender issue, but I want to be sure that the way I hook my battery tender up is correct. I did not buy the battery tender named, "Battery Tender." I bought one at Sears that I believe is called "Battery Maintainer." It was around $30. In any event, the instructions say to hook the positive cable of the tender to the positive post on the battery. The negative cable is to be hooked to the engine or frame. Someone has said that it is "liability BS" to do so in this fashion and that one can simply hook the positive to the positive and negative to the negative. DOES IT REALLY MATTER? When I did my son's Trans Am, I did it "by the book" as I'm not mechanical and I'm a bit **** about following exact directions on topics I don't know squat about. You guys are the experts...so I trust your judgment. Thanks. Dan

It's just caution to the Nth degree. By hooking the negative away from the battery there is no chance a spark will ignite any hydrogen. The problem with that is there isn't a lot of bare metal where you are going to be sure of getting a good ground.
