After almost 5 years, I tried to set the cruise control coming back from palm Springs. It would not set, got out the book, no help. I am assuming it could have come from the factory inoperative, anyone else experience this??????? Just a feature I really don't care that much for, but since its there, I want it to work.

I have had mine disengage and not re-engage while driving. If I slide my foot behind the brake and pull it towards me I am able to re-engage the cruise control.
Apparently there is a 'pin' behind the brake pedal that disengages the cruise control.
I was having the same problem on my '97, what I had to do was put my foot under the brake pedal and lift up on it a little. After I got tired of doing this I climbed under the dash and adjusted the stop light switch, this solved the problem.
My 99 Vette discontinued working, made an appointment with the dealership to have my Airconditioner tensioner replaced and while on the way to the shop was stopped by the local police for not having any tail lights. Told the dealer to fix the tail lights and was told that was why my cruise did not work. Check it out. Doc

Thankfully, mine has always worked just fine. Could be the switch, the unit itself, a fuse (not sure if there is a single fuse that controls the cruise or not), or perhaps something else. Good luck getting it solved.
When I got my '01 in Oct. of 2003 the cruise control did not work. I had the car about a week before I tried to use it. It was repaired under warranty. The problem with my cruise control was a bent pin in the wire harness. Hope this helps.

Mine stop working once when my knee hit the key shuting off the car while driving. When I restarted the car, the cruise control would not work until I stopped removed the key and restarted the car.
When mine failed GM initially adjusted something but it failed again. The second time they replaced a microswitch behind the clutch pedal which fixed it. Other's have mentioned the brake pedal microswitch. It could a number of things.
As mentioned, it's quite common that it's just a tail lamp, so you might check that before scooting to the dealer. Most vehicles are designed to make the Cruise inoperative when a tail light goes out. That way you'll take it in to see what's wrong with your cruise even if you didn't notice that your tail light was out...they figured that was the quickest way to keep your safety equipment working...

Thats not it, just went out to the garage to check the tail light, all is well.
