Default Tranny Problem! Reverse.

Every so often when I go into reverse, it just won't go in. I do the whole 3rd-then-Reverse thing, but still every so often it'll just start to grind when I try to put it in.

Any ideas?

BTW it's a '01 Z06

Try going into 1st first (it's closest in gear size to reverse). That usually makes going into reverse easier. I assume you have a stock shifter. I have read between many threads regarding aftermarket shifters some difficulties with reverse. The older Z's also have an aluminum fork and you may have problem with it and need it replaced with a steel one. I would assume from what I have read that you would likely have issues with other gears as well if it were the fork.

BTW ... I have yet to go to aftermarket shifter because of the varying observations on the different ones, stiffer shifts and seeing many now keeping stock shifter and shortening them. I might just stick with stock for a bit longer and just get a different **** that will go down more than stock. I only seem to have trouble (grinding sound) when going from 5th to 6th when the car isnt fully warm ... anyone else notice this ?

Hope some/any of this helps.

I have a friend that has an 02 and he has to double clutch it to get it into reverse, not all the time though, sometimes it will slip right in like its supposed to. Give it the old double clutch and see if that helps

I had to get my clutch, flywheel, slave and tranny replaced in my '03, but I think it was previous owner error. It got to where it would stick in fourth and it never had the reverse lockout feature. I guess the guy pushed to hard on it and broke it. I'm still getting it fixed, the flywheel the dealership put in is not balanced so I get a very nasty vibration at about 3000 and up. They are going to put a new one in this week and see if it fixes the problem. Has anyone else had a similar problem with a new flywheel?

Thanks Andy. Do you know if the fork is external or internal to the tranny. Either way, is it something someone could do in their garage?

Unfortunately I dont have personal experience with it, just read various posts about it. I believe its internal component in the tranny and most experiencing the issue had it repaired under warranty. Assuming thats any part of your issue (it might not be), you may want to contact a local dealer (hopefully you have an extended warranty of some sort). I do not believe its considered a normal wear and tear item so you may be able to get repaired without cost. If your not having issues with other gears and the double-clutch or going into first before reverse helps, than you probably dont have a bent fork and it may be just normal response that you are seeing.

Good luck.

I have the same problem every now and again. This started happening when I had the Spec ll clutch put in.

The forks are internal and probably not something you would want to do unless you are an experienced mechanic. Pulling the transaxle would be quite difficult without a lift and transmissions can be pretty tricky to assemble.
