Hey everyone. I've been looking to buy a Corvette for a while, but the only thing that sets me back is the insurance. Reason being is, I'm only 18 years old. I have heard of pleasure driving insurance, where its cheaper and you put less annual miles on the car. Is there some type of age limit on these things? If not, I'd love to buy a Corvette real soon, and just do that.
Also, I was quoted around $500/mo for full coverage when I checked on esurance.com and progressive.com, does this sound about right for my age? Or pretty bogus and high?

I hate to say it, but these days most Insur. Co.'s look at how long you've had your license as part of your cost factor instead of age like they used to. Being 18 ... only 2 yrs. with a license, Vettes being High Performance Vehicles, male ... three strikes towards the high cost end for you. How about being put on your parents home owners policy + multiple car discount ... also maybe look into a High Performance Driving School for additional training (additional discounts)? Good luck.
I have both by Buick daily driver and the Vette listed as "pleasure" cars on my policy... and there is no mileage restrictions
but I think in your situation, the only way to get a reasonable rate is to be on your parents policy. Just make sure you understand all that entails. personally, I wouldnt want to be on my parents policy any longer than absolutely necessary... they can be held responsible if you have an accident & how long can you stay on their policy?

How can you have your Vette insured as a "pleasure car" but yet not have any mileage restrictions??? The whole idea behind the pleasure car insurance is that they can cut you a break on the policy price because you will only be driving it a limited number of miles per year and you are more likely to be driving during optimal weather instead of being out in the rain and snow.
I have the pleasure car insurance with State Farm and I am limited to 7500 miles per year. That works for me bacause my car is just a weekend car and will be in winter storage for the entire winter from mid November until probably April or May.

I'm also curious, I have SF too, and have the 7500 mile limit.

The best thing is to have the Vette licensed and titled in your parents name, and then have them list you as an occasional operator. You will also need to have another car that you will be listed as a primary operator.
I bought my car from a young man (20 yrs. old) who had his car licensed, titled and insured that way. $6000 a year for insurance on top of maintenance, payments(I don't know your financial situation, and I'm not asking) and other incidentals - not to mention the rising price of go-juice (93 Octane) doesn't leave much $$$ to live. If I had to pay $6K for insurance, I'm not sure I could afford the Vette - and my wife and I have 2 incomes.
If this won't or can't work - then my best suggestion is to wait a few years until these numbers become more manageable. Sorry.....
shop around
im 21 and pay 35 a month for full coverage 100/300 with 500 deduct.
its listed as pleasure but there isnt any milage restriction on it
im with Allstate
im on my own policy
i have a 90 f150 listed as primary and then a 96 cavalier and then the 98 vette convertible
which i might mention is the most expensive to ensure
its worse than the z
i used to pay 300 a month when i had a camaro but when i bought this i shopped around and now pay 150 a month with my renters insurance included
when your shopping around dont tell them how much you currently pay thats a green linght for then to F you real good
now for my stats
i got my license suspended at 18 for 2 tickets under 18
its an ohio thing
then got 2 more tickets after i got it back 1 for operationg unsafe vehicle and 1 for 29in 25 both at same time
i havent hada ticket in 3 yrs but i do have claims too
ex gf got angry about size of current bfs piece and had him take a bat to my car (4800$) current gf got hit by uninsured driver (26000$) so im not a model person to insure
just remembered one other thing
one reason my insurance is cheap is also geograghy
i live in a po dunk town called massillon
and people around here that can afford corvettes dont usually wreck them
people who can afford camaros do usualyl wreck them
my insurance with my camaro was more because of this

Honestly, if it was $500/month for insurance, a C5 would not be in my garage. The suggestion of going on your parents insurance until you reach 21 or so is a good idea. Some insurance companies will allow you to insure a car as a pleasure vehicle, but normally you have to have another car to drive for this to happen.
I would try to go under your parents policy if thry would let you or you could try geico direct,I had good luck with them, but I know other people who have not,its worth a try..
500/month, WOW!!!! I pay like 600 for 6 months, full corverage... I am glad you like corvettes and really want one, but maybe you should hold off for a couple of years... I bought my first corvette at 18, but it was a 75 stingray, and even then I was only paying maybe 500/6 months full coverage, thru Geico... Maybe you should try to start small to gain some browny points with your insurance company before jumping into a C5, try a C3 for a couple of years, trust me you will love the way people look at you in one of those... Just remember "the Vette gets em wet." But try not to get any tickets, cause that will hurt a little.
Unfortunately, at 18 you can't get a specialty insurance company to take you on. I can see the really high rates and sympatize with you. If you're over 25, Grundy Classic (www.grundy.com) will insure you for pleasure use with no milage limit. I insure 4 Corvettes including my '04 for a total of $1030.00 per year, no deductible, I state the value. Good luck.
We have our Vette insured as a pleasure vehicle and yes it does save us some money. However, most insurance companies require that you have another vehicle insured as your primary before they will insure one as a pleasure vehicle. Also, insurance laws vary considerably by state, thus will ones insurance premium. Your best bet is shop around and get quotes from those insurance companies doing business in your state. Too, as others have mentioned here, you really should look at coverage under your parents insurance policy. Good luck.
I checked with that Grundy site and I am a little concerned by some of what I am reading...
dont most all states require uninsured/underinsured coverage?

I have my 04 C5 on "pleasure insurance" through Farmers. My verbal agreement with my agent is that it would not be used for commuting (rarely). When I got the paperwork I noticed a mileage limit of about 5000 IIRC. Do insurance companies actually check miles driven somehow or is it the honor system?

My SF agent told me to expect a form in the mail, it's on the honor system...
I am 23, clean record, full coverage on my 00 cavalier, and 99 vette comes to about $465 a month.
I too have pleasure insurance on my vette, with no milage limitations..
