I just picked up a used 2002 Corvette with a glass top. There a couple of small cracks in the top. They are about 1/2 inch long coming up from the rain gutter on the sides. They can be felt with your fingernail in the top but I don't think they go thru. I took it back to a dealer with under 36,000 miles on it and they said they were scratched. I said they couldn't be scratches since they go down into the gutter and that couldn't get scratched in that area. Then they said that they are wear and tear. They wouldn't do anything about it. They kind of seem like a stress crack from flexing or from being installed without being perfectly in line. Anybody else have any experience with this type of problem?
I have heard of members getting spider cracks in their glass tops. I am not sure of the frequency, but I am sure with GMs record it is a good bunch.
I would think ones that are either in the cold alot or in the sun/heat alot would have the most problems just because of stress on the top. So far my 01 does not have the problem in NJ, but it is stored in the garage most days...
Dealer just replaced my roof that had the spider cracks. Mine were in the film laminated between the lexan. They did inspect the roof for scratches, and found none. Had no problem dealer look at the roof, agree that it was defective, and ordered a new one. Took a month to get it, but was not in a big hurry.
I got 3 cracks in my transparent top at about 8,000 on my 02. All 3 appeared on the driver's side starting at the trim and moving inward. Two back by the B pillar and one by the A pillar. At first I thought they were scratches but they actually grew from about 1/2 inch to 1 inch over maybe one month. I had only taken the top off once in two years so I suspected a defect in the top or the way the top is aligned to the A and B pillars. I took the top to the dealer that sold me the car new. He did a search and could find only two tops at other Chevy dealers, both were on the east coast and this was in Seattle. So, he took a top off a new 04 Vette he had on the lot and swapped me, no questions asked. Chuck Olson Chevrolet in Shoreline Washington.
