Default Fram Air Hog Filters ?

No Flames please .. not quite ready for a full intake upgrade yet due to some unexpected expenses these past few months, but figured I would try the Fram Air Hog which is seemingly similar to the K&Ns, a tad cheaper and on sale this weekend at one of the auto store chains. I figured anything is better than the OEM paper filters. Just wondering if anyone else with a Z has tried it and whether it is at least sufficient filtering-wise. Will probably try it with the zip-tie mod (unless its not advisable with oiled type gause filters ?). Not expecting any major improvement but hopefully some improved responsiveness and more consistency over longer period of time than with paper filters I would imagine.

Thanks in Advance guys

Frankly, there would be so little gain over stock you would be disappointed and ditch it in a few weeks anyway. I know, I did the same thing with my C5..bought the K&N filter only (air hog wasn't around then) then replaced it a couple months later with the Vortex. you should just save your money for a Blackwing or Vortex or something similar.

Tried air hog on 03 Z06,will not fit down into airbox. Ribs in air box interfere...Tried to tell store manager design was wrong, but i was not getting through to him.Refunded my money and put air hog back on shelf to sell again...

While I have nothing against Fram products. I'd stay with either the OEM paper filter and air box set up or go to a high performance complete replacement system like a Blackwing. There isn't that much to be gained just by changing out the filter alone.

Thanks for the replies so far. I surely wouldnt expect any real gains. I just feel that after about 2300 miles on oem filter I might have lost some response and probably needed a replacement and figured a performance filter might actually last longer without a felt loss. I definitely think I would like to get a blackwing within the next few months probably. Sounds like if anything I should get the K&N for now and diss the Air Hog idea if it doesnt fit properly (thats the kind of info I was hoping for).

Hey Andy,

You might try getting a hold of Lou Rivera, who posts over at the Z06vette.com site, He just went to a S/C and did have an ever so slightly used K&N FIPK air charger system (not compatable with his S/C application) he wanted to sell. I have this aftermarket system and I really like it.

Default Hp?????

That is odd to me. The stock Vortex is so restrictive, and the K&N works on using the oil embeded filter which works reverse of stock filter technology. I saw a test done at a shop with a meter on the K&N filter over stock, it would amaze you. They also did a test on the Air Hog and it gave similar results to the K&N. We were curious when it came out. One thing I do know is that they use a different media type embeded with oil. The only difference is that is not reusable.

Thanks. The Air Hog is actually re-usable same as the K&N (Cotton Gause material that is oiled). I chose not to buy it as the design does appear that it would be a problem properly fitting into the tray the filter sits in having a rubber housing around the complete outside of the elements thereby not allowing them to spread out over the ribs in the tray (although I would guess that it could be forced to fit). I think I will wait and get a Blackwing in a few months (more towards springtime).
