I was getting on to the 4 lane heading home after driving it around for the weekend (it's only a weekend car now) and, in my normal fashion, I mashed the accelarator all the way down. Something made a cracking sound, the engine went to the redline, but I wasn't exactly moving rapidly. It was in D at the time. Turning 3000 rpm at 70, not good. Pulled off into a parking lot and tried the gears. R now only makes a buzzing noise and the car does not move. It lurches forward in D.

This is about the time that you should consider putting jars in grocery stores with a picture of a broken corvette and a "Please Help" in big red letters.

The verdict is a broken "sun gear" in the transmission. I dimly recall this from autoshop about four decades ago. I have to say I've never heard of one "breaking"? 58,000 miles on it.
It was kind of funny this morning. I figured I'd just start the engine to get the power steering to work, put in in neutral and push it out of the garage onto the street and drive it to the dealership.
The sucker would not budge in neutral, forward or backward! My wife and I both tried to push it, and it would not move.
The dealership sent the flat bed along with the CORVETTE specialist (benefit of living in a small town, I think). They started it, put it in D, and pushed it backwards into the street. Very weird!
$980.00 is the estimate. They'll keep it all week--I'm taking the company Camry around the state this week, so I'll have my love back by Friday.

I agree, time for a built tranny. The good thing is after you do it, especially on a mostly stock motor, you will have a bullet- proof tranny.
Nate is no longer with Xtreme Motor sports in Tempe. He now runs a parts store called Corvette Garage. I don't think that they do tranny swaps.
Give Xtreme a call, Bill or Mike will help you out.
Good Luck and keep us posted.

P.S. those "Sun Shells" seem to break often. Ask if you could buy an aftermarket one from FLP and have them(the dealer) install it. Is is much more rugged than the OEM one.
