i put in a hurst in my 2003 z last week and was worried about the noise. well the noise isnt noticeable unless you are at or near wot.
and the strange part, 1, 3, and 5 dont make as much noise as 2 and 4 under heavy acceleration. i took out the stops so it cant be that. i put loctite on the adjustment screws so it shouldnt be that either. i tried the pvc cap mod and that didnt make any difference at all.
i cut the plastic ring out of the stock boot and inverted it around the housing of the shifter, it is really tight. so the vibration or noise is coming up through the shaft of the shifter.

any ideas?
If your using the stock ****, it may be the culprit. Some stockers make noise and some don't. I'm using a billet aluminum **** and have no noise issues at all. HTH
I'm not sure what is causing your vibration but, I can tell what finally fixed mine. And that is filling the grooves with tarry material acquired from my local dealer on the threads of the plastic piece in between the ****. And wrapping the shifter shaft with the same material.

The control rod going back to the transmission changes direction and also rotates when you shift. This may be the reason it rattles in one gear and not another. You're right about the vibrations being transmitted up through the shaft too. My stock **** would rattle in some gears but not in others.
