i just bought a 98 m6 coupe and the first week it performed fine and this week sometimes the car won't start and while driving, all power cuts out momentarily(electrical and mechanical). one time while starting i had the column lock up....any idea what the root of the problem is? as an added note, the previous owner had an aftermarket sound system and left the amp in but replaced the cd face with the factory one and now the speakers wont work as well. any help would be greatly appreciated fellas. thanks in advance, take care
hmmmm...check your PCM..under passenger footwell...I wonder if the battery leaked and is causing you problems..that or maybe the A/C drain tube clogged and water got in there
I'd start by going back to the original owner. Ask him what else he took out besides the radio.
You said the speakers don't work. Did you check if you still have speakers, you know, behind the grilles?
All kidding aside, start with him.
lol, i should have elaborated...in the two way speakers, the tweeter is working but the woofer is not
yeah, i plan on taking it to my mechanic on monday and get his thoughts on the situation.
Could be a loose ground in the PCM. It's under the battery, not footwell (that's the BCM). But since it sounds like the previous owner was likely touching electrical connectors in removing the amp, etc., I would ask him where they were working and try to narrow down the area - there may be a loose connection or ground.
Check the DIC for codes.
The fact that you're loosing all power for a brief moment would indicate that the PCM is cutting off. If it were water or battery acid on it, the result would likely be more like a confused PCM throwing all kinds of codes rather than just cutting out.
actually, it does throw a bunch of different codes regarding the ABS, SES, and traction control
Check under the battery for acid leaking on the PCM. I've heard of TCM and ABS codes being thrown due to a damaged PCM. That would be the first place I'd look.
