If it is highly polished aluminum, using a towel or just about anything at all will cause minor scratches -- thin, like spider web.
It it gets really dirty and looses the luster, try Mothers Aluminum polish with micro rag, keep polishing till all the black is gone. I had boat speakers on a tower that were aluminum. Considered clear coating, but they would dull after time in the sun. Anodizing was another option, but that makes it loose it's mirror shine.
The more you can leave it alone the better. (if aluminum)
