Default Painting Plastic Engine Trim

I was thinking about painting my own engine trim. (the plastic pieces)

I would love to hear from people who have done this themselves.

What did you do to prep, did you primer first, what products did you use, did you clear coat it afterwards...

What product is closest to MY in color

Sorry for the repeat, but the search function did not turn up much...

Peace
Willfulone

Lots of us have done it. Sand it good 1st to smooth it a bunch, then they make a plastic adhesion primer to help the paint stick. After that I'd get a coat or two of primer on it, and wet sand them until smooth as glass.
I went to auto paint store and got a little kit that uses aerosol and they mixed an exact match for my paint....it's pretty ez. Clear it afterwards and eveyone will be astounded how nice it looks.
Have fun

I just did mine last weekend & it wasn't to bad, hardest part was the coolant tank removal. Make sure you use a good plastic primer and sand it good, I started off with 400 grit then 600 & 800, I only did a little wet sanding. As far as color match you can get all the colors from GM for approx $7-$8 a can, that's a 6oz can. I used Dupli color as they make GM colors and its $4 for a 12 oz can. Take your time and have fun & take pics! DIY rules

I used Krylon plastic paint it worked great. But the GM paint will probably be better if you want a good color match.

EHHH??? What did you say?

Seriously, the only thing I would add to this is if you can't find a plastic paint that matches, get a touch up paint, and use a Plastic Primer before applying your matched paint. (Plasti-Kote #469 is Plastic Primer.)

Have fun!
