Default Problem here : Power Steering Pump ???

Hi guys ,

Sorry for my english ,

Today I noted that when I am stopped in my vette (1997 C5) with the engine on , when i turn to the left or right , it sounds like RRRRRRRRRR in the steering wheel

But when I am moving , no any sound , i turn left and right with no any sound on steering wheel .

Only problem I had before with my car is water pump ... Always message saying low coolant (every 4 days need add some) ..... Is there some relation ?

If someone understand me , please help me ... yeah I am latino = )

The only thing I know to do is check the level and if its low put some in it. Every power steering pump I had go bad just quit so I don't know if yours is leading up tom it or not. Good luck! Someone will read your thread and be able to help

Also check the condition of the serpentine belt, it could be ageing and needs replacing.

If I understand you correctly... the noise you are hearing is the coolant leaking from the weep hole of your water pump on to the serp belt..
you need the water pump replaced, and the serp belt replaced and the balancer pulley cleaned together with the tensioner pulley..

Dear Evil-Twin ,

Not only the sound also some vibrating move when u turn left or right .... but when u are running , then no vibrating and no sound .....

OK I will suggest it to mechanic here ... Guy I really appreciate all your support ... here in my country I feel alone with my Vette , but you revert it !

I just bought a water pump from a member here , and will go to dealer on monday .... but this guy will ask a lot of $$ .... so I will try nomral mechanic first and explain all .

THANKS !!!

Dave, now that you've added power steering fluid you may want to drive slowly (in a big parking lot or something) and turn the steering wheel slowly full right and then full left. This will help get any bubbles out that may have gotten in the lines from being low on fluid. After doing this the steering may get a little more quiet if air was the problem.

the collant dripping from the water pump on to the serp belt will cause the power steering pulley to slip when you turn the wheel..

the water pump is an easy fix.. any mechanic can do this one... its about an hour job... remember to use anti sieze on the bolts..and use proper torque.
