Default What can I use to paint the rotor hub/hat?

I just picked up a new set of NAPA rotors and I had a great idea: I wonder if I could paint the hat area to keep them from rusting? I'd probably do the outer edge of the rotor as well...

I doubt the normal "rustoleum" stuff would survive the high temps. Anybody have any other suggestions? Maybe the hi-temp stuff they use on BBQ's?

They make high temp engine enamal. 500 degree and 1200 degree. You can buy it at Oreilys. I painted my caliper brackets with it and they look great so far.

You have a nice looking vert and IMO, you should have paid a little extra for the zinc plated, drilled and slotted Brembo sport brakes. Less than $300 and they never rust and look so much better than the stock rotors. Can you still return them?

Thank you for the kinda words. However, drilled/slotted rotors are not allowed in the SCCA ASP class. Rotors must be stock or stock replacements...

I used black grill paint. Picked up a small can at Wal-mart. Brushes on very easily, and holds up well.

I did not know that. :o The factory rotors have the black painted hub. How much are the factory rotors as compared to Napa? Would you consider buying a near new set from a forum member for a good price? I'm sure your concerned with cracks and runout.

The NAPA rotors are $25 each. I believe stockers are ~$40 each plus shipping from Fichtner.

Most of the hardcore racers (I do not qualify for that title) just buy the NAPA rotors in mass quantity because: a) they're cheap B) they're better performing than more expensive slotted/drilled rotors and C) they're basically a consumable item on a racetrack.
At any rate: I was not aware that the stock rotors had painted hats. Mine look like dark rust.

FYI: Here is a list of allowed modifications for Street prepaired. Anything not explicitly listed as an allowed modification is prohibited. Brake rotors are not a allowed modification:
http://www.moutons.org/sccasolo/Rules/sp.html#s14

However, there are MANY people who run aftermarket rotors in Street Prepaired and only at the national level will anyone say anything. I've personally seen DOZENS of cars violate that rule. I wouldn't worry about it.

High heat engine paint would work. Or, you can always go to something like Folia Tec - I have it on my calipers and it has held up very well in the three years it has been on the calipers.

Anybody know how hot rotors get during severe usage? 1000 degrees?

I used the Rust-Oleum High Heat paint in Bar-B-Q Black. The Bar-B-Q Black comes in both brush on and spray cans. I found 8-oz cans of the brush on at Wal-mart. It has held up very well for me but I don't track mine very often.

Painted my calipers and hats with Rustoleum over a year ago, they still look great. DISCLAIMER: My car only sees street use under normal driving conditions. Not sure how they would hold up on the track

You might also check with local metal shops - platers in your area. I put drilled/slotted GM perf parts rotors on the front, but got them white cad plated (similar to zinc) for ~ $50 for the two. The plating on the brake contact area wears off shortly, but the rest looks great for almost forever (mine still look great after > 50K miles and couple of years). Paint also works - just ensure your get the high temp type.

and in NCCC they cost you to move up in class too
not worth it, unless they are an oversized set up

i got mine from Oreilys, cost about $12 more each, but they come with a lifetime warranty. if they warp, no loss

oh BTW, i used hightemp grill flat black paint on the backside and the center vents on my new rotors. i hope it keeps the rust down. brake dust is one thing, but i can do without the rust spewing out onto my chrome wheels

i race this coming weekend, so i will see how well the paint holds up

Rustoleum on the calipers and body color (body shop color match) on the rotors. No special high temp or anything, no problems.
