Default Check Engine Light on...

This guy comes to test drive my corvette to buy and when he's driving it the damn Check Engine Light comes on. Murphy's Law definitely applies to me. Anyway, I honestly have never had this happen so he ends up making me an offer but I'm still pissed about this light. I drive for about 5 miles and the Low Oil Level light comes on. I check the oil and it's at the fill mark so I go to the auto parts store to buy some mobil 1. I figure this should settle it. I add the oil and the DIC low Oil Level doesn't exist anymore but the check engine idiot light is still on. I'm steaming cause I don't want to pour money into a car I'm selling. About 3 miles after the auto parts store the light disappears. WTF!!!

Question....Could the check engine light be because of the low oil level and if so why did it take 3 miles to go away.

Well, I had no current codes but it did have a P1416 (Air System bank 2-B) in history. Of course it had quite a few in history but this was the first time I looked and it was the only one in the Powertrain Control Module.

Didn't know this damn car had an air bank, wonder if it'll help me fill my tires?

Its payback because you want to sell her. Ever see Herbie, the love bug? My suggestion, don't buy a ferarri with the money and keep it in front of your house.

I can tell you with abosolute certainty that the 1416 code will set the light. My check light comes on about two to three times a year. The code is always 1416HC (history and current). I clear it, and the light will go out until the next time the weather changes. I don't know if that's really it but it seems to me that the lights for me are beginning of spring, beginning of Fall and if I drive her over the winter. Bring up the codes, get into manual diagnostics and when the PCM code for the 1416 comes up just press and hold the reset button. Your light should go out.

If you clear codes by disconnecting the battery does that throw off all parameters such as idle, air/fuel and other tuning issues? If you had a dyno tune and disconnect the battery, do you need to re-tune?

I don't believe that you'd loose any tuning info simply by disconnecting the battery. I'm not certain you can even clear codes by disconnecting the battery. As far as idle and air/fuel the car will re-learn in 50 to 100 miles.

Another piece of forum knowledge that was posted a little while ago. This might help with the cause of the of the 1416 code.

Courtesy of thevettenet

"The AIR pump is used on this vehicle to lower tail pipe emissions on start up. The PCM supplies a ground to the AIR pump relay, which energizes the AIR pump. The PCM monitors the heated oxygen sensor (Ho2S) voltages in order to diagnose the AIR system....

"If the PCM determines that the HO2S voltages for both banks did not respond as expected during the tests, DTC P0410 sets. If only 1 sensor responded, the PCM sets either a DTC1415 or P1416 to indicate on which bank the AIR system is defective."

Some things to check for yourself - Inspect all pipes and hoses for being connected; secure clamps on the pipes and hoses; no kinks, holes, or pinched hoses/pipes; components with evidence of heat damage.

Done any work on it lately?

Dunno yet, still looking but I need to sell the vette first. It seems with the cold weather and no car shows it will be difficult to find one but I do have my eye on one. Here it is...
