Default Horn pad HELP!!!

Hey guys and gals! On my wifes '97, when the steering wheel is turned the horn beeps. Brought it to the dealer and they said the horn pad needs to be replaced, $680 plus labor. My question is, can I check out the contacts for the horn myself, or am I at the mercy of GM? My wife will not let me pull the fuse for the horn, which was my simple fix! I know the airbag is in there and I would have to disconnect power, any ideas? Thanks, this forum has been priceless to me!!!

You might be out of luck on this one. That unit which is steering wheel cover, airbag assembly and horn assembly for a '97 is GM part #10407331 looks to be all one assembly which includes the connector and spring contact for the horn. The GM List for this is $680.55, GMpartsdirect sells the part for $476.38. You might be able to replace it with the help of someone who has taken a steering wheel apart. God knows I wouldn't try it. Even the Vette Essentials website cautions against undertaking this yourself.

Maybe you could get the part from GMparts direct or from Fichtner Chevrolet save a couple of hundred bucks and have your dealer do it for just the labor if they would.

Since I would have a hard time spending around $1000 or more to fix a horn on a car that might not even bring $20,000, I would try to find the part at the Corvette salvage yards. Then, I would look for the mechanical or body guy at a body shop to do it, preferably as a cash weekend side job. It should not be very different from other GM steering wheels.

It's nice to save a little money...but geez, that's an airbag your talking about...how much is your life worth. There are plenty of things I'll skimp on. Ebay is a great place to save some money but not for something like this. Just my .02 I love his comment in the auction,
"I won't be held responsible for any problems or failure of this bag deploying.AS IS NO REFUNDS"
Yeah, I won't be around to collect it

In the manual it indicates that the pad (with the cross flags) can be removed. This gains access to the nut to remove the wheel. You could inspect the area to see if there is a fix...like a pinched wire, dirt or something. You could also remove the covers on the column or the column itself to further inspect.

You could also remove the wheel and check the wiring under the hub.

Info above is correct, the horn switch is not servicable and in the airbag module. It is your call whether you want an airbag or not.

One could disconnect the horn or install a by-pass with a toggle switch for example. I would not do this though.

Got some shop manuals coming, want to do some reading before I open this up. Don't want to go in blind with the airbag in there, never saw one blow and I don't want to ! But I do want to take a look, most electrical problems that I've had on any car were just due to corrosion, loose wire. etc.. Sure, change the part out and it's fixed, but a lot of times it can be fixed without changing the part.
