Sears has a Craftsman low profile racing style floor jack on sale for $119, with a $20 craftsman club discount, for a total of $99. It is a
1 1/2 ton capasity. (3000 lbs)
I've seen postings of pictures from other members using this same jack. Is this enough capasity for a Vette, just to put it up on jackstands?
They also have a 4000 lb capasity jack, same style, but it's $199

The whole car only weighs in at about 3300 lbs. When you jack it up, you're only jacking one corner at a time - so I think the 3000lb jack should be okay. But jacks are kinda like money - if a little bit is enough, then too much is just right!
Your C5 weighs less than 3300 lbs. so, unless you're going to try to lift the entire car off the floor and balance it on the jack pad, rather than just one end, that jack will be just fine. Remember - never use the jack as the only means of support while working on the car. Use jack stands or ramps.
BTW, that Sears jack you're talking about is the same one I have. I've been really happy with it. Comes with foam rubber on the handle to protect your car, a little tool tray and it gets loooooow! You'll like it.
i bought the sears alum 2 ton jack a few months ago. i like having the extra protection even though i always use jack stands. i have a 3 ton sears,2 ton no name also, but after buying the alum jack ,iwould never go back since they are so light and also quicker to pump up . my 3 ton is slower to pump up even though it is a one pump jack also

I have one of the Craftsman aluminum floor jacks and it works just fine in lifting the car. No problems lifting the entire front or back end at one time. The jack is very lightweight too, so it is easy to maneuver around in the garage.
I bought that same jack last week!! They didn't have any on the floor - had to buy it online and pick it up... Used it several times since -- VERY NICE!!! And a whole lot cheaper than the heavier version....
I have one, works great on the C5. I had to change the bolts to allow the jacking pad to go into the hole with the lifting pad removed. You only need to do this if you are lifting from the side rails though
