Re: Pissin' Contest
Saw my neighbor just now...the one who was trying out a silver Viper a few weeks ago. Turns out that he did not buy it and said that the ride in that car (a '99) was like the ride in pickup trucks of the 1950's...very rough and creaky (his words). He also mentioned that the handling was not at all good.
He'd never ridden in a Corvette, so I invited him for a ride in my '02 coupe to see how great it rides and suggested that it'd be great to have a new C6 on the block whereupon he said that Vettes and Porsches were too common and he's looking for something more exotic.
Oh well ..... guess our cars are not for everybody...
Yep, and he may not know what he's missing in a Vette.
He may not know what he's missing in a Vette, but with a Ferrari, he sure would have a good replacement for all of that!
The F355 and the current 360 Modena are arguably the best cars ever made. *putting flame suit on*
Though your get more bang/buck with a Vette and they are awesome from many perspectives, they are not exotic, nor are they supercars!
With that said, I'd much rather have a 35K Z06 instead of a 100K Porsche 996TT, which we all know have very similar performance numbers. But that's with an economy-mindset, if money was not an issue, I'd rather have both!
There really is something to be said for exclusivity. He should have been told that he would have very high exclusivity with a C6. At least for a couple of years. By then he could think about something else. I know that when I bought my 2000 new in Oct of 99, it was still fairly uncommon to see vettes, but now they're on every block and it DOES take away some of the pride of ownership. It doesn't take away from the fact that it's still a fabulous car but when you pay almost $50k for a car and then you see 16 yr old kids driving them around everywhere with wheel mods, spoilers and whatever else bolted onto them, it doesn't quite seem the same as owning my 355F1 Spyder.
So he's not really "a tool", he's apparently got the money and wants to have something special as opposed to something practical and a good bang for the buck.
Are you kidding, what did he expect,...its a true sports car with that in mind it is supposed to ride rough and that comes with creeks.
Tell him to go buy an SL600 or SL55.
Jon

A couple of other cars that he could look at are the new and improved F430 Ferrari or an SL65 Benzo. Don't have to worry about creaks in those.

Your neighbor is right, the C5 is getting pretty common - there are quite a few of them around this little town. If he's got the cash, nothing wrong with wanting something different.

Facts are facts. C5s are relatively more affordable than exotics so people tend to drive them daily even though some do treat them as garage queens or weekend toys. Your neighbor was just stating an opinion and an observation. No need to take offense at what he said.
