After reading a post about this I tipped the mechanic that did a front end alignment on my daily drive tonight. Boy what a difference! He was most appreciative, spent a good amount of time telling me what was wrong with the alignment and got it right on the mark! I highly recommend this!
I don't let anyone work on my car... EXCEPT an alignment guy and it pays to tip the guy when he is good. It is very important that the car is lined up right.. not just close.
$10-$20 is fair... or a case if you know what he drinks.
I recently purchased two sets of tires. I tipped the guy $20 before he started and "pleaded" with him to be extra careful with the rims, and to give me a "perfect" balance. He did a great job. I tipped him another $20 when he was finished. I figure that $40 was money well spent. I sure didn't want any half assed job. I usuallly will tip a guy who acts like he cares about me and the Vette.
These guys work hard for a living. Any job that is a customer service job like auto service is stressful. So a little grease may help me and my Annie have a better day. JMHO
I would tip before he starts the work; otherwise, he would feel bad since he may have not done as well as it could be and finds out that he got big tip

You tipped a tech 40 bucks for mounting and balancing 2 sets of tires? I guess if I didn't know the guy working on my car personally, it'd be better than having a set of trashed rims.
Fortunately, I don't take my wheels and tires to just anyone.
Sure I tip a waitress, barber, car wash, taxi driver, but I don't tip any worker who is making a reasonable hourly rate. If the job performed on my car is good, then I'll be bringing the car back when it requires more work and telling others the mechanic did a good job which will get him more business. If the mechanic does a less than satisfactory job on my car, I will keep bringing it back till he gets it right or his boss gets it right
The shop gets the big bucks, not the mechanic/alignment specialist. These guys work hard and are often overworked (it was 7 pm and he had to stay ntil the last car was finished). Giving him the tip before hand with a few words about treating your car well sets him in the right frame of mind for doing a good job. If I were in there shoes and someone tipped me before the job, I would treat there car with extra care! Just my 2 cents. It worked for me and I only tipped $5!
I only have one of my best friend who owns his own shop work on my car. He does not even let his other workers drive it. So I guess I'm lucky. I would be embarassed to tip him.
For the personalized attention my baby gets???? Of course I tip my vette tech. I drive 75 miles just so that he can work on it. My tech has saved me well over 5k in preventive maintenence costs by catching early problems. Example; " Your car is all ready Matt, I went ahead and looked over all the recalls for your year and went ahead and installed the CLB and A/C lines ." I can call this person anytime and speak with him directly. That is service!
