A few months ago it started to get tough to put my 01'Z into first gear.
It happens about 30% of the time. When it happens it grinds a little bit like the clutch is not all of the way down.
This happened to me as well.
You will have to make sure you’re in first gear, and not half into it.
Try to keep your hand off the stick after you make the shift your hand pressure is causing the grind because you released the clutch when it is somewhere between neutral and 1st.
I changed the rear end and Transmission fluid with redline and it happens much less frequently.
It is definitely NOT becaue I am keeping my hand on the stick or not shifting right.
It won't even go into first gear without grinding. The grinding happens with the clutch buried. I can feel the shifter resisting as I try to put it into gear.
At a stop, shifting into second and then first seems to help.
I am putting redline in on monday, so hopefully this will help.
I do have a Hurst shifter, but I don't think that is part of the problem.
If it doesn't, what is my next option?
I assume this is a wear item, as it was fine for the fist 27K miles or so.
It sounds like your clutch is not fully disengaging. If your clutch is not fully disengaging, you should also have grinding problems with reverse gear too, but you don't mention that. It could be as simple as a cutch adjustment, or it could be a bad throw out bearing. I've not had this problem in my Vette, but I had an identicle problem in a previous car I owned. The problem was that the clutch's throw out bearing had worn out which prevented the clutch from fully disengaging.
