Where's the On Star?

Onstar is on my Escalade and I never activated it.

a)Very few blondes drive vettes, no need to worry about them calling OnStar and telling them they've locked themselves in the car.
b)C5 owners pride themselves on how their cars look. Don't want to have that ugly On Star antenna like on the C6
c)Satellites have problem tracking cars that run in the triple digits.

It was never a C5 option, not sure why, but I wouldn't want it anyways.

I heard the blonde OnStar skit on the radio as well - very funny

Though I think the "tumor" bump on the C6 and other vehicles is from the XM antenna - the Onstar being built into the rear view mirror.

If I had on star in the outhouse they could hear me play music.
Information is fed into the on-star module (called a vehicle communications interface module) and the module also outputs commands to some of the on-board computers via the GM LAN system. This allows
- the doors to be remotely locked/unlocked,
- outbound call to on-star assistance center if the air bags are deployed,
- On-star to read your DTC codes
- On-star to track your vehicle, but only if a pass code number is supplied by law enforcement
- and any of the other features offered.
Also, not only does the wiring harness have to be redesigned for integration, but the call button system center has to be added (in a mirror, console, etc.), and a microphone and antenna are also required.
To update an existing car such as the C5 in its later years, is very expensive. To add on-star to a new designed vehicle as in the C6 is not that expensive.
As for theft control, it does work; however, someday the thieves will figure out which fuse to pull to disable the system, which in turn will deactivate any tracking mechanism the system offers.
In addition, for those conspiracy theorists, On-star is too short handed to sit there and track you to see where you are, or how fast you are going. Besides, they will get fired for doing so. To track a stolen car requires the law enforcement agency to give a specific code number.
Your wife cannot call on-star and ask them to find out which Hooters you are at so she can come check up on you.
As for its worth? I had it in two cars, and only activated it once on the first car. It was worthless in my opinion, since my cell phone and a good Garmin GPS would suffice. (GPS had the phone numbers and addresses of hotels at exits on the interstate, and my cell phone was used to make the reservations.) However, evidently it is not worthless to that many, since they make a lot of money on selling the service to customers.
The only nice feature is the notification if the air bags are deployed. If your air bags deploy, on-star calls the vehicle, and if no one answers, they call the emergency agency near your GPS location and have them dispatch a crew. This has saved many lives; especially for those who were in an accident on a lightly traveled road.

I may be wrong but I could have sworn I read about a couple of lawsuits where the gov't used a warrant to keep track and listen to conversations on a drug dealer and a mob guy. It turned into a suit because it was considered invasion of privacy.
Other than it utilizes a satellite, I don't know anything about the specifics on how On Star actually works so I don't know if it's even possible.
Has anyone else heard of these or was I reading the Nat'l Enquirer again?

You mean like learning why cows fart? Or paying farmers to not grow food? I'm sure the gov't would never waste our money....lol.

As for the legality, a warrant to overhear a conversation on an onstar system would be the same as a warrant to tap a phone line. So, what would be the grounds for the suit? Or, are they treading new ground on the wireless communications issue?
That's why it sounds strange to me.

I honestly don't remember the specifics, hell, I can't remember if I read it, watched it or heard it. Perhaps it was an urban legend, I can't remember exactly.
