Event Data Recorder (Big Brother)

EDR Event Data Recorder or Automotive Black Box
Anyone heard about this?????
Heard one of our Congressmen (Ohio) on the radio this a.m. that the government passed the EDR Bill through the House and that they should be installed in the 2006 top of the line cars like Cadillac, Lincoln and Vettes. Supposed to be a test year. Bush is against the bill, but it appears that the libs and tree huggers can get it through over his veto. There are a couple of big companies from California really lobbying the suckers to get it through.
They say it is to track accidents and driver habits. Yea right. From what one guy said this a.m., he’s an engineer, they will be able to track any mods and if you fool with emissions
they can literally shut you down from a satellite like On-Star.
He also said that if you tinker with it, it makes your ride useless and that they are considering heavy fines for any alterations. I guess they want us all on bicycles.
There is more info about it at http://www-nrd.nhtsa.dot.gov/edr-site/media.html and the pdf on it.
I may be a Chicken Little,
but I was one person that thought you could continue smoking in restaurants and bars.

Here is a funny joke to go with this story...
Black Boxes Installed in 4x4's
The National Transportation Safety Board recently divulged they had covertly funded a project with the US auto makers for the past five years, whereby the auto makers were installing black boxes in four-wheel drive pickup trucks in an effort to determine, in fatal accidents, the circumstances in the last 15 seconds before the crash.
They were surprised to find in 44 of the 50 states the last words of drivers in 61.2 percent of fatal crashes were, "OH CHIT!"
Only the states of Oklahoma, Tennessee, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and South Carolina were different, where 89.3 percent of the final words were, "Hold my beer and watch this"

Would be nice if you could contact the OnStar operator and say "hey I'm stuck in BFE, would you please unlock my column"

C5's have all had them since day one. Records the last 10 seconds or so of the vehicle telemetry. Does not record voice, does not steal your credit card info. All it does is something that a skilled accident investigator can do on the scene in a couple of hours anyway. Paul
