Missed a shift from third to 4th at about 90mph and hit 2nd for just a half a second. What damage should I look for- No engine tapping or anything yet but I am very concerned. Any opinions?
I think we all have done something to that effect one time or another haha. Your rev limiter would have kept you from doing any damage.
The rev limiter will not save you under these circumstances. In the case of going into the wrong (too low) gear at too high of a speed, the speed of the vehicle is forcing the engine to rev past the point where the rev limiter would have kicked in.
I've seen bent pushrods on early LS1's from this. Theoretically if you over-revved really badly (say, putting the car into 1st car at 170mph), you'd probably see connecting rods and block fragments fly through the hood.
But 90 mph in second gear for a second isn't that bad. I have seen some do alot worse. Hell some have even put it into reverse, although I'm not sure how they did that.
Redline into 3rd is about 75mph. So 90mph in 2nd is probably 7200rpm. 7200rpm by itself could be somewhat destructive but maybe not. It depends on whether the clutch had enough time to fully engage. If you don't hear anything or notice any problems, you're probably ok. Physical damage is usually immediately noticeable.
did you smell any burning or see and dust come out of your shifter area. A guy at the track tried to drop a 6 speed in 2nd gear and burned his clutch up pretty good. He had a dust cloud come out around the shifter. weird.
I've done that, twice to be exact. Haven't done it in over 8,000 miles and the engine isn't making any strange noises so I think I'm Ok. Anyway, wheel lock-up should have saved you if you got the clutch back in fast enough. I seem to remember someone saying that an ODB code is thrown if engine RPM exceeds 7,000. Not certain about that though.
RealityCheck is right, the rev limiter will not help in your situation. The first thing to go is usually the push-rods, one or more may have bent. The good news is that it's easy to check and cheap to fix.
