Default Which Z06?

Should I spend a couple more g's for an 02 vs. an 01 Z06? I know that the Z02 has more power, but how significant is the difference for normal daily driving? Thanks.

For NORMAL daily driving, the difference is not significant.
20hp & some suspension upgrades for the most part. However, many here would say save the money in the difference between an 01 & an 02 or 03 & put it towards modding the 01 (provided it's in great shape). Just my 2cents worth..Ron

My concern is more of a monetary than performance. My feeling is the PERCEPTION of less performance in the 01 car vs. the 02 car could mean lower resale in the long run. Again, this was my criteria for looking at 02 and 03 cars. The $ difference is not that great. $ 2,500ish. Just my newbie opinion. Buy one, you'll love it!!

w/ 2th. Also, I know that not everyone likes the HUD but it wasn't available on the '01's. And what about the 2001 oil burning problems...

I test drove a 01 and a 03. I thought that their was a huge difference in accelertion. My 99 FRC felt as fast as the 01, but no way as fast as the 03.

I am also looking for a Z06 and torn between an 01 or 02+. I am leaning towards an 01 because I plan on modding the 01 anyway if I do find one with basic mods like air filter and exhaust work (off road x-pipe and new catback). It should be near the 02+'s in performance with those mods since the most noticeable change for those years were better air filter setups,no pup cats, and new cam. Close enough for me for a fun daily driver. I am not made of money so I am looking for something very close to $30K or below with 30K miles or less in great condition. I've come to the conclusion in my mind that it's ok 99.999999% of the time when I am on the street and not on the track that I am just a tiny little tad slower then an lightly modded 02+ z06 if I were caught in a race. And how often would that happen....probably 1 in million chance around where I live. Plus it's all a driver's race anyway. So it's cool for me....save a few grand and still have a sick *** ride. To me,any year Z06 is pretty bad ***. So I say....pick the newest and cleanest ride you can comfortably afford and don't look back!

Good luck.

What kind of exhaust mods? Probably about 15 hp gain but don't know what exhaust mods you mean.

Price is not bad at all and good miles. I'd purchase one at that price.

Just bought my '01 with 9500 miles for $29,900! It's Torch Red, and I love it! Traded my pace car for it, so it's a little different, lol!

Most of us will never tell the difference between the 01-04 Z's. I bought an 04 but might of purchased an 02 if I could have found a low mileage Z in like new condition. If you can swing a new one for $40-42 grand that could be the best deal...Last model year of the best vette(Z06) ever made.

I'd make sure there are no oil burning problems, or would like to see proof it was repaired if there were some.

No to knock the 01 Z it was a milestone, but buying used is tough enough, I would need some evidence it didn't have the oil problem or it was addressed. Not all did have an issue but its a know issue. I also like the HUD.

If you plan on modding it get an 01 and go to work, any engine issue may be addresed in a plan you have for modding it

The '01's had issues with burning oil due to thin oil rings on the pistons. Heavy mods on an '01 could easily make the problem worse. If you were looking for a stock DD, then the '01 wouldn't be a bad choise. However, if you want max performance, and are planning to mod I would pay the extra cash for the piece of mind.

I doubt that any aftermarket exhaust will add much if any horsepower over the stock titanium Z06 exhaust. Most people change the exhaust for sound and looks only, not performance.

You can always take the vin number to a dealer and have them run a history on the car and see what work was done on it. I would stay away from the 01...good luck!

It's not likely that you would gain 20 rwhp with only the mods that you mention. If the 01 Z is the one that fits your budget then it is a good choice over a regular C5. However if you can swing an 02 or newer it woule be beneficial in a couple of other important ways. First of all, resale will be better on the 02 on up and secondly the 2nd year cars had the bugs worked out and make a better mod platform because of it...i.e. the oil consumption issue, etc.

You could probably purchase the newer car for the same money or less that you would put into the car performing the mods you mentioned above, so to me the newer car makes more sense.

For what it's worth...

Thanks for the comments. Today I looked at a very nice '99 FRC. The car and price is very attractive! But will I be regretting for not waiting for the right Z06?

In normal everyday driving I doubt you'll notice the 20HP difference. I will say this, I love the HUD and that alone moved me to an 02 and newer when I was out looking.

Good luck
