Can someone give me some hints/instructions on the best way to clean up the engine and
surrounding compartment area under the hood. I know some of you must have
developed some interesting methods to clean various areas under the hood.
Also, these type questions/topics are sometimes better asked in the Car Care Products section of the Forum. Several knowledgeable people hang out there and they may be able to provide you with better answers to these type questions.

I wipe down my engine compatment every time I wash the car. I use an old Absorber to get the dust off, and if there is any grime that won't just wipe off, I use a rag with some Simple Green on it. I've never sprayed water on the engine, although there are some that do this using very low pressure.
If engine is real dirty/greasy, I cover the alternator and spray on Simple Green. This is after I've warmed the engine a couple of minutes.
Then, I close the hood and let this set a couple more minutes and lightly mist off with garden hose.
I use an old towel to wipe everything off and dry with.
If engine is just dusty, I'll lightly mist with water and wipe down with the towel.
Once engine bay is clean, you can just wipe it down weekly with a damp towel to keep it looking good.
I know there's a lot of pros and cons in using method but I've never had a problem and it works great for me. You just have to use common sense with the water and be sure to thoroughly rinse off the Simple Green.
