Default $40,000 Ash Tray

OK, someone tell me if I am over reacting. I don't think I am. I am very fortunate to have a reserved parking space. There are only a few and as the DOO I get one of them.

However, it seems all the smokers like to gather right in front of my car and my car is sometimes just covered in ashes. It's not like they are flicking ashes on the car, at least I hope not. But because we have alot of smokers, you get five of them standing there smoking, and ashes are all over the place. The ash tray is on the west end of the building.

All smokers are supposed to smoke on the west side of the building, my car is on the east. But because my area is covered, they seem to prefer standing near my car.

Since I have an Arctic White Vette, the ashes are really visable. It makes me livid when I walk out and see that crap.

I am about to make a big stink about this. I am in the position to 'put the hammer down' so to speak, but just not so sure its a good idea.

Some people just have no damn respect....

What do you guys think?

You are not overreacting and yes, I would mention it.

I would approach the people asking them to do me a favor rather than "bringing down the hammer". I don't think they have "no damn respect". I just think they are unaware of what they are doing.

If the only place to smoke is uncovered and you park in the only covered space then that may be a losing battle.

See if they can get the smoking area covered somehow.

You know it would be very difficult to do a butt can rectitus operation on someone, especially if the butt can was inserted in their butt crosswise. I do believe if you force the issue your ride will be hurt. If you have sway with the powers have them outlaw the tabakki in your area. Car cover with a large "No Buttzos" silkscreen would be nice, but cumbersom. I don't think it's petty. Move their butts somewhere else under penalty of canning.

Wish you luck.

Regards.

They do know its a problem. In the last two month two formal notices were sent about it from HRS, at my request.

The entire east parking lot is covered. The west side is like an out door patio type deal.

But yeah, you are right, putting the hammer down is probably not the best idea, just a little steamed right now....

I think one or two public beatings will get the word out - that smoking is BAD for your health....

I wish I had one. But I agree with you. Just having a third notice sent about it. And all the notice says is smokers are supposed to smoke on the west side of the building. This has been a hard fast rule since we moved into this office in 2000. They DO know better. Looks like I will just have to send reminder everytime it becomes a problem again.

Thanks for letting me vent.....

Smokers are the same idiots that flick their ashes and butts out their windows. Get a better vise, like drugs or alcohol.

If they don't care about their lungs being clean, why do you expect them to give a damn about ashes on your car?

I wouldn't worry about it ... the ashes will blow off as soon as you move the car. Now if they were grinding butts out on your hood ....

No, not really. I have an end spot too, with a concrete pillar on the drivers side, so I am well protected that way. I like the spot I have.

Yes, true, but I have also noticed the ashes will occasionally leave a little brown stains on my hood. Very visable on my white vette.

What about asking them to smoke in a different part of the east parking lot. Make it someone else's problem with a old car that doesn't care. You could even invest a few dollars and put a "smoker's butt parking" can at the far end of the parking lot; then tell them you just noticed that HR put the can there for them to have a covered place to smoke.

That's a tough one. I think I'd be inclined to find another parking spot.

Unfortunately, if you "get tough," they'll likely mess with your car. As someone else stated, they don't care for their own bodies, how can you expect them to care for your car?

Do those brown spots you mentioned come off easily?

And I do not think your'e overreacting. I'd feel the same way. With me, it's the lawn-mower guys that get grass clippings on the front of my coupe the day after I detail it, or so it seems. Luckily, they cause no harm and most blow right off when I leave.

Good luck.

I would definitely say something, but do so in a non-threatening way. Maybe start with a couple of them and see if they even realize that the ashes are flying all over your car and leaving stains at times. Perhaps a friendly conversation will enlighten them and they will move away from that area.

Our parking lot is pretty small. Only 4 cars fit under the covered parking. I did just what you said, but on the west side.

VET 350, my other option is the mall across the street...

Red_Racer, some of the brown stains do not come off, unless I use the stuff I have to remove acid rain stain. Not sure what it's called. Was given to me by a car detail shop.

Other than sending another reminder notice, there is not much more I can really do. Like some others have mentioned, I could see some one getting upset about it and taking it out on my car.

It's just I shouldn't have to deal with....

You're not going to change the smokers, the only person you can change is yourself.

Buy a car cover.

Hi Redline -

From an OCM standpoint, it would be relatively easy to "raise a stink" and get corrective measures communicated....however....this will make your car and potentially you, the target of opportunity for the ire of all those who were "directed" to alter their behavior.

I choose to park at the far end of the parking lot. This solution would work for you as well, and you would not have to raise a stink.

That is assuming you do not have a physical ailment that would preclude a long distance walk to and from your car.

best regards -
