Default M.A.F. with or without SCREEN ??

I have a 2002 Z06 with a Tiger Shark Front Fascia and when I put the Blackwing on (which is directly in the air flow of the open front!) I catch this surging when cruising, not depending of gear or speed or rpm but related to the constant throttle opening...

On the other hand the car is a beast and here is the other thread with the mods and the dyno sheet :

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/showthread.php?t=947082

They have tried to solve quickly this in Kelley and changed the spark plugs, the gap of them or I have tested a different kind of spark plugs wires and nothing was working around this .
My feeling was that the car was going leaner and leaner when I was driving with a small and constant opening throttle.... at this point Dan decided to go with more fuel at low revs, and after some adjustments it was better, in the very hot afternoon it was almost ok...but when I tried again at night with good fresh conditions (where the engine is better!!) the surging was here again....

Then I decided to try to put a screen in front of the MAF (I have read that 2001 Z06 maf was a solution) AND ALL THE SURGE PROBLEM WAS GONE AWAY !!!I will go on the dyno again with Dan and Angel mid december to finish quietly the tuning and my questions are :

-from your experience do we lose power with the screen in front of the MAF???
-is there another solution ???

I have a 98 coupe with the same surging problem ever since I put on the Halltech Stinger and also cut out the radiator plastic shield to introduce more cold air especially if I lift off the gas and decelerate. The car surges lightly and the exhaust sounds especially more gurgly. BTW, I have tPIS headers,no cats,X pipe and straight pipe dynomax mufflers.

Anyway, I am thinking the cut out radiator shield is causing too much air turbulence close to the MAF and it's hard for it to pick up a precise airflow reading, hence the slight surging.

Our cars like cold air. And fresh air. But not turbulent air. And especially with your front end, that's a whole lotta turbulence!

I guess the fix would be to add the MAF screen back in for you. Or fabricate some type of screen mesh in the front fascia to make the airflow more smooth. Or if you don't wanna ruin the look of the car, fab up some type of airbox around the blackwing where it won't restrict airflow, but help it to deflect some of the front turbulent air hitting it.

Thank you Don
Your answer is making a lot of sense for me and the recent experience that I did with the add of this screen in front of the M.A.F. is working perfectly and solving this SURGING problem.
You are then right on this by the way.

Now I would like to know if some people here have experiment the same phenomenon (with a similar solution) and if there is a difference between with and without the screen, specialy on the Z06, and what kind of power change it makes, if any ?

Since adding the MAF sensor screen will restrict the airflow, aren't you defeating the whole purpose of using an after-market airbox? After all, one of the changes that Chevy made to the Z06 after 2001 to gain 20 HP was to remove the MAF sensor screen.

I added a Blackwing to my '02' Z06 and have had no problem at all.

Did you disconnect the battery first? I've heard this will allow the
computer to relearn the additional air flow and make the necessary
corrections.

God luck.

When I added a Blackwing to my '01 Z06, I removed the screen from my MAS. No problems here. There is a difference, as that is one of the items the factory used to pick up the 20 HP in '02.

Miami, I had the same problem with surging on my modded coupe with a screenless MAF.
I switched to a 2002 LS1 MAF with the screen in and the surging went away.
I posted a thread about max rwhp with a screened MAF. I got replies of up near 500rwhp WITH a screen in the MAF.
So the screened MAF will support big HP.
You may gain a Very FEW ponies without it, but no Big HP Gains. And yes, the cold air intakes still work just fine flowing through a screen.

Thank you for your answers

anniv88 I have read a lot of posts with no issues with the add of a Blackwing on Z06 2002+ and I agree on that, but it seems to be just a little more special with the Tiger Shark front fascia, it seems to cause some turbulence through this big entry for fresh air in the middle of the fascia....the computer had time to relearn and I gave some miles to the engine to be sure that the mods where matching with the electronic.

CJS I have find the thread about max power and screened MAF, very interesting and also good information.
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/showthread.php?t=907206

I will have to check on the dyno what solution is the best:
- unscreen the MAF and make a derivation for the cold fresh air from the front of the car
- MAF with screen and cold fresh air and some tuning

I will let you know if you are interested.
