Painted Engine Parts
I am interested in MSG for the parts that typically get painted. Has anyone painted their own instead of buying the pre-painted parts? Will regular automotive touch up paint hold up? What kind of prep is needed? Or will I be wasting my time painting the parts and, later on, end up buying the pre-painted ones anyway?
I am too cheap to pay for painted parts. In case I screwed up, I bought OEM radiator shroud cover, fuel rail covers. Got the fiberglass unpainted wiper fluid, and radiator overflow covers from ecklers. Found a guy on this forum selling unpainted fiberglass fender covers.
Then I researched paint spray guns. Did not want to use my full size Devilbiss. Ended up with a Sata minijet HVLP. Awesome gun, easy to use. Bought it from a local auto paint store. Got the anniversary red paint and a bright gold, some masking tape and a really high quality clear coat.
Everyone likes what I did except me. I need to learn how to buff out my paint jobs. Thery were not trash free. I have a buffer, just have not got around to learning how to use it.
I have a pic posted on the "other" corvette forum, and got good reviews. However, my free pic hosting site sucks, so it is useless to give you a URL. email or pm me, and I'll send you a pic. Or you can look for my pics at the "other" site under the same name.
In case you can see this pic, the battery cover is a piece of crap, you pay for what you get.

I did not trust my ability to paint and make it look good, so I went with painted pieces from Kewl. Top quality IMO.
go with a pro; people will be able to tell the difference!! I have ordered from here before and the communication and parts are A1 quality!!!! The Best of Corvette for Corvette Enthusiasts
used flex primer, wet sanded, re-primed, wet sanded, painted, wet sanded, painted, wet sanded...clear coate and wet sanded a few times and buffed out! Came out great. I just can't post a pic here at work
If you know nothing about painting, ect. you may want to get help...or buy the pre-painted ones
