This afternoon my daughter called and asked if I would go by the dealer and pick up her husbands car keys (01 Z06) and they would meet me later on to get them. Too keep them from going to far out of there way I told her I would just meet them back at the dealer. And being nosey I wanted to know why it was there. When they pulled in I asked her hubby what was wrong and he answered, you guessed it, Steering Column Lock He tried it last night and again this morning but no luck! He had to call a wrecker. They supposedly fixed it!
Now, I have a 01 A4.with 48,000 miles. I have had it a little over a year with no problems. I had read a post on this board of one guys locking up while driving! How can I find out if mine has been “fixed”? I sure would hate to go on an excursion out through the woods!
Thanks

The dealer will REMOVE your column lock for free because it's an A4. Make sure you tell them to not reflash your computer if you have custom tuning. They might not do the reflash to A4s though.
If your car has been fixed either by having a Column lock bypass (CLB)installed or by having the recent recall performed you can turn off the engine, remove the key, and still be able to turn your steering wheel. If your steering wheel still locks you need to contact your dealer as in automatics they install a new locking plate that won't allow the locking pin to engage in steering column. (This is a recall) On manual 6 speeds they cannot change the plate so your only protection from a possible locked column at probably the most inopertune time of your life is to install the CLB. It is available from many aftermarket companies. I got mine from Corvettes Of Houston and installed it myself.
Well I went out and sat in the driver seat and turned the steering wheel about a quarter turn! So I’m guessing it’s been fixed!
Thanks Guys, I’m really glad I found this board!
Well, in my case it was much ado about nothing! But am I right to be concerned about my son-in-law’s Z06. My daughter takes it to work on occasion just to keep the battery up. And she has been known to “Let the ponies run”
While I was at the dealer I just had to check out the C6 they had. I’m going to have to get one, one of these days! I asked the sales manager if he would take a 2 for1 offer (My A4 and my son-in-laws Z06) he said sign right here! I told him I would like to but I would probably get killed!

If it was fixed at a dealer, then by taking your VIN in they can check the service history in their computer and let you know. If it is an A4, they should have put a plate in there that keeps the pin from engaging.
