I posted a message about 10 days ago describing a quick road trip I needed to do to visit a family member. Well, I am back from my trip and wanted to give a little update to our forum members. I covered about 1440 miles out and back in roughly 20.5 hours. Average speed was 72.4 on the DIC. Get this...average MPG...28.8. NO TICKETS, NO OIL CONSUMPTION - I've got about 4800 miles on the Z now and had put 1.5 quarts in so far. I did the drive in two 10 hour sessions, and I will say that over the long haul, the Z is probably not the most comfortable highway cruiser, but then again, that's not what it's designed to do. Even the BLOSE CD isn't too bad if you crank it up a bit (really hadn't listened to anything but the wonderful exhauset note prior to this run). I did run through about 2-3 hours of rain on the way home, and that was interesting. Thank you active handling. Thank you GM for creating a 385HP car that can get 28.8 MPG!

It's better than I thought it would be. Unless you test drive one for a couple of days, you just can't appreciate it's attributes!

Thanks for sharing and a great post. I am nervously waiting for my 02 EB Z06. I hope to watch it being built on Monday 7/30 and the wait is getting very intense.

...the more you drive these beasts, the BETTER they get. I look forward to ANY excuse to take the Z out on the road. To those that are waiting: You WILL be Rewarded!!

We just finished a one-week, 2400 mile Memphis to Carlsbad CA jaunt in Karen's Z. See my post "We Love This Car!" What a great ride - except for the part today where I left the handbrake on briefly, & couldn't figger out why it seemed so sluggish... Doh!

Here's another recent trip....we just returned from a 4,300 mile trip from Toronto, Ontario to Galveston, Texas and return, in our Z06. This was our fourth annual NCRS ROAD TOUR in a row, all in C5s.
Z06 Highlights:
Super driver....had the fun of changing gears up & down about a zillion times.
Z was Nice & COOL (many of the 30 companion Vettes had NO A/C and/or tri-power etc (8-10 miles-per-gallon).....outside temperature was between 90 and 103 degrees for the 13 driving days.
Adequate space in trunk for the 13 drive-days/motels and 17 total days on-the-road.
Seats always comfortable, no sore back.
Did not experience any untoward 'heat' on right leg.
At mile 3,500, got message "low oil level"....added litre (i.e. quart) which I had brought along....message gone. changed oil/filter upon return, at 4,300 miles. Had changed oil/filter just before trip.
Cruising at 64 mph to about 76 mph range, there is a 'whine' that sounds somewhat like tires on a "rough road surface...stops when foot off accelerator....sounds like drive train.
Water temp stayed at 192 nearly all the time, in the face of the very hot weather. Gauge only hit 205 on the "vertical" winding road up the mountain at Cumberland Gap, as expected.
Great live Blues in Memphis. Great live Jazz in new Orleans. Great country music in Nashville.
Had Z pic taken at Winner's Circle at Texas Speedway. No laps due to 'repairs" to track (re CART).
Over the 4,300 miles, saw only one other Z06 (black), in Houston, July 7th, AM.
Highest gas price....$1.89/gal in Manassas, VA (Sunoco 94, July 1st).
Lots of fun.....

Its not just aroad racerI beg to difer. Its a road racer that loves the hi-way,after all what is a hi-way but a de-tuned race track or vice/versa.Mine runs tottaly stock through the gears except when I mash the throttle and thse 2 little garret tubos make all hell brake loose.
Is750+ hp at the crank and 775 lbss. of TQE.maake it a road racer???one thing its definately isnt and thats 1/4 mile car but 98% of our population are 1320 people and dyno Queens.
A stock Z06 is one of theee finest road/HI-WAY cars ever built send your car to a top rate tuner like LPE or a super hi quality shop like Xtreme motor sports and spend 8-9,000 on your Zeee and see what you come home with LPE cost me 60,000 LOTS OF LOOT
BUT for less than12% of that Nate will give you a daily reliabble Rocket.
HE just got done putting in his 427 in my 99 vert it screams he doesnt belive in engine break in only gear box and rears there broke in I DROVE BACK TO Az SLOW HARDEST THING IVE
DONE.In 2-3 weeks Im hitting an unknown track and I may post my times its my 1st time on the the juice bottom end is all topnotch i was even thikink of askining Dave Schotz to drive becase he can and I cant
Any way got 5 kids to teach me about lifeI know ican only get 1 quick run before Im tossed so Im may get real driver.
GoodLuck to all Dave.

Took a road trip last Saturday at pocono speedway.....in fact I took four road trips last Saturday, each one lasting about twenty minutes. During my road trip I ran into a viper,a Ferrari a SVT rustand and assorted Porsches and rice burners. WHAT A CAR some of the cars I ran into were faster on the straight away but couldn't keep up in the twisties others were as good as the Z06 in the turns but were left in the dust on the straight away. I must say I took a short trip but it was long on fun....WHAT A CAR

I too just returned from a 3,325 mile roadtrip (up thru Ok, KS, NE, CO, WY, to the 30th Annual Black Hills Corvette Classic in Spearfish, SD then back down thru NE, KS, OK, and home to TX). The Z06 performed flawlessly and in the states that allow 75 MPH on interstates I ran about 80. Also went up & down some low elevation mountains and passes and still the car only used 1 quart of oil! I think that is pretty good considering the temp (107 in KS & OK) and the speed (80 MPH)running the AC and listening to Bob Segers, Fleetwood Mac, etc. I had a great time & met several people and saw hundreds of Vettes (not counting Rocky Mt Nat'l Park, Devils Tower, Mt Rushmore, Badlands, Black Hills, and yes even Wall Drug in Wall, SD. Can't wait to go back next year; but first I have to go the 7th anniversary at the NCM for the Labor Day celebration (and also Pigeon Forge & Gatlinburg, TN and the great Smokey Mountains). This Z06 is a great car to travel and have fun with. GO FOR IT!

Safety Car
Just got back from a 2,400 mile trip and added my first oil at 6,800. My average mile slightly under 26 mpg with 8,400 miles total on car. Generally cruised in the 80 to 95 mph (when I found serious speeder to follow) range. I couldn't imagine a better road car.

I drove my QS/MOD 01 1800 miles on a four day trip. My wife and I found the ride, seats and comfort to be excellent. I found the handling and power to be ZO6tastic!
The car is a great road car and performs with exotics costing five times the MSRP.
