Any auto fatality is dreadful but when it involves a vette I always tend to pay more attention. Just heard it this morning on the local tv but a guy driving his vet in the early hours on I5 near Portland OR. lost control of his vehicle at speeds police say where in excess of 90mph.
He flipped several times on the meridian then hit 2 oncoming cars. He was killed instantly but the other drivers survived.
I always wonder what the cause was in these situations. Mechanical fault, blow out, driver fatigue, distraction etc. When I drive my vet I always feel safe and that nothing can harm me and I'm untouchable but it brings it home and makes makes me realize just how careful we need to be out there on the highways. I'm very sad for his family.

Reason: add "me" and correct realize.
I've told many people that, along with my Acura CL, I never felt safer or drove with more confidence in any car than my '94. That said, it is that confidence that can cause even the best of us to become "over confident" (although, I see this much more frequently in Mercedes drivers than any other make) and make bad judgement calls.
Unfortunately, this is the kind of story that leads others to make comments like "oh...a Corvette...figures. They are always racing around." I notice that in many police crashes, the type of car is usually not mentioned unless it's a Vette. They'll say something like "late model vehicle."
We can be as careful as possible, but some relatively rare failures like the column lock, or wheel failure (both of which have been reported on this board) can completely take things out of our hands.

Hopefully Alcohol is not the factor , Could of been Driver Fatigue.
But am I the only one that notices that speeds were in EXCESS of 90MPH???? Im not saying we have never been over those speeds but when you go above those speeds you take chances....The vette is more than capable and the driver could have been more than capable but you cant control all the others factor or uncontrollables.....something running into the road, column lock, etc.........
90 doesn't leave many options when something goes wrong but generally most of us probably don't think much about it driving such a car. Remind me to slow down.
