Default How to remove 3M double sided tape

I bought a set of BSM from a fellow board member and am having trouble getting the old tape off so I can put on new. I've tried Goo Gone and the tape just laughed at it. Then started using a razor blade. That works, but I'd like to have it all put on before next Christmas. Anybody got any tricks, or product recommendations that actually work?

It is a PITA to get it off if it was installed right. I just use my fingers to pull it off and then clean it with alcohol. It will take a while but it should all come off with no problem. They do make an eraser wheel for an air tool but it makes more of a mess than it really helps.

Perhaps this may help. When we are forced to clean and retape a moulding (as opposed to replacing), instead of taking the razor blade and "sawing" back and forth across the width of the moulding, I actually slide the blade along the length of the moulding. You can gently pull it and the razor will "slice off" the tape.

I hope that helps, sure beats "sawing" it back and forth.

That's what I did when I took my BSMs OFF. Good luck!

That's what I did too, but after I tore up my thumb I got a pair of soft leather gloves and finished it without more pain or scratching the car. I think I use WD40 to get the residue off.

Several years ago I had to remove some pinstripes on my van and I wasn't getting anywhere fast so I stopped by an automotive paint store and told them my problem. They sold me a quart can of adhesive remover. It worked great and I have used it for a number of different hard to remove things since then. Try that source, as those guys in the business have some pretty good products that never make it to the shelves of Walmart.

Adhesive remover works well - sometimes warming it up with a hairdryer loosens the adhesive bond too.

3M makes three different adhesive removers that I'm aware of (they each have a four-digit product number).

3M is one of the best companies for customer service. Every company should be run like 3M...are you listening, GM?

Call 3M's customer service number and ask for technical support for one of their double-sided tape products. The folks are very knowledgeable and can probably recommend the magic adhesive remover that you need.

BTW...I know the search function doesn't work very well on this forum, but I remember reading about a user purchasing a used BSM kit from another individual, and due to different fading/aging characteristics of the paint on the BSM and the new car it was to be installed, it was not a good match.

If I may ask a stupid question, have you made sure the BSM's will match your car in direct sunlight?

I've used a hair dryer to loosen the tape and then could use my fingers to roll the tape off. The 3M adhesive remover works well too.
