Hey everyone, just want to get something off my chest. I recently bought a Targa top off ebay item number 7926119951. It was scratch free with no dings. Sounds good, right? When it shows up it has two fractures in it. I contacted the shipper and he was upset. I went down and contacted UPS and they took pics and said they would contact the seller. I have a friend at UPS and he told me they would not pay for the damage, the top was not packaged properly.
I've called the seller (Robert Nikora, rnikora@hotmail.com in Ferndale, MI 313-433-5156) and he said he was trying to collect on the claim. I waited patiently and I called UPS and they told me their Insurance did not want to pay. I contacted Robert Nikora and told him this, but he still believes he will get the money. I asked him to go half with me on the repair. I needed it painted anyway and thought I'd pay half, it's only fair. A local body shop said it would be $300 to repair. That's not bad and for $150 a piece sounds good to me. NOW, Robert will not return my calls or e-mails and so far it looks like I'm getting it stuck to me!!!
And when a private parts ships something to another private party... UPS will not pay any claim that they can wiggle out of. And this is the case despite what others (that claim they're insiders at UPS) will say.
UPS is the worst when making a damage claim (a claim between private persons and not from one of their business clients).
Sorry for your bad luck, I would still fight this with the UPS, if you’re a big enough pest, they might cave in. I would also contact EBay and give them the scoop; they might be able to pressure the seller to at least contact you.
My wife and I have made over 300 transactions on eBay, haven’t been burned yet, as a rule of thumb we have never bought anything over 30 bucks from anyone with less than 5 positive feedbacks unless we are paying in person.
WELL, I had a similar situation. My top from EBAY was damaged by FedEx (gutter bent and rubbing marks) and they are giving me problems with a claim as well and THEY PACKED IT!
Thats why you ship USPS with insurance and state "GLASS" on the shipping label. UPS sucks, why they are #1 is beyond me. UPS also does not insure glass, even from a comm. shipper. I've been there, done that. Sorry for your trouble dude.
Oh yeah the cheapest repair for the glass is $500, that I have seen, anyone seen better?
I had the same problem (poor pack job) with an e-bay seller when I bought some large idustrial circuit breakers. Long story short, I got nuthin from USPS or seller. Seller went quiet but he got 3 nasty e-mails a day for about 3 months from me.
I kinda thought 300 was a little cheap, I'd be afraid to let that shop repair it.
...hmmmm I was a little concerned about this too...
I hate that you have not been so fortunate so far...
Id hate it more to here your misfortune continued with the repairs...
I went through PayPal for the purchase, but even with PayPal Ebay will not pay on shipping claims. The $300 for the repair was from a local dealer. This was the only reason I was going to take it there. I've seen the work this guy can do and he does a really good job.
Thanks to everyone for listening and your feedback.
Gotta say, in the seller's defense, when I bought mine from Gene's Karshop, I expressed my fears about shipping (I'd heard stories like this before) and Gene assured me that when HE packed it, there would be no damage.
Well Gene was right, there wasn't. It took me 30 minutes with a razor knife to get through all the packing and bubble wrap he put on the thing. It was really a work of art that I hated to destroy (but I wanted my top).
I don't think the average person would know to do all that Gene did. I know I wouldn't have.
