Hi. Just an fyi, they're all C5s... Coupe, Convertible, Hardtop, and Z06. Personally, I like the looks of the Coupe best of all, so that's the one I would get + some mods like intake and exhaust for starters.

For the best guide to the differences between model years, check out Corvette Black Book 1953-2004 by Mike Antonick.

4K sounds a little low to get the power of the Z....
If thats the route your gonna go, get more estimates and ask around.

For less than 4k I run faster than a Z06 with my FRC. You can find a low mileage FRC for about 21k and throw a blower on it with heads and a cam and you will dust a Z06. But, you can also buy a nice Z06 for about 32k and start from there.

Yeah, that's true. You will spend the money to get it to run like a Z, but...

Lots of us just don't like the Z body style or we like the top off features provided by the coupe or vert. I can live with my "slow" coupe until I put that Magnacharger on it but the FRC is something I could never change.

12.4 quarter mile, 2 passes with slippery stock tires. At my first autocross on a closed road course, I finished third. I was beat by a supercharged Z06 with probably 500rwhp. He beat me by less than 1 second. Not to slam anyones car, For less than 4k in my motor I can run with and beat alot of Z06's. To be honest with you, the power my car has now is pretty dangerous and I did wipe out after the mods. Did not damage the car but, Scared me to death and broke a rim. I can post the timesheets or pm with you with my mods.

you could just ask a fellow forum member in your area to help you checkout a car?

I have found that the majority of the members here are willing to help out in any way they can! (me included!)

For $1G more than what you're looking to spend, I got an '01 MY Z51 Coupe MN6 with only 9800 MILES ON IT!!! .

Course, I've known the dealer owner for 5-6 years and played high school hockey w/ his son

It's all personal preference. Just decide what YOU like, and buy it. Any bodystyle corvette is fast. I'm just glad your not buying one of the "other" makes!!

Without question the Z06.

Modifying a coupe or a vert to reach stock Z06 performance is an expensive and never ending endeavor as there are stock Zs known to run very low 12s and some have even broken 12 seconds in the 1/4 mile. Bone stock and in warranty. In the twisties due to the tires, suspension, etc, the gap widens between the Z and the other C5s.

It does not have to be modified unless you want to modify it to compete with and beat most anything you'll run across on the road. This is huge when you consider warranty issues and resale. Whereas a stock 2.73 geared A4 C5 will get smoked by a number of cars out there.

Even a very mildly modified the Z is capable of some outright impressive performance levels if well driven. The Zs performance limits are only in the drivers ability. Improve your driving skills and the sky is the limit..

or bone stock if u like

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/showthread.php?t=962212

Try reaching that level of performance with a coupe or vert and it will cost you an outright fortune. Not to mention some degree, perhaps a significant degree, of drivability and dependability. You could go nitrous to inexpensively reach the above levels. But what about your waranty with nitrous?

Riding around with the top off is way overrated. You want to go topless, buy a motorcycle.

FYI - Don't forget you'll have to pay taxes when you purchase. It could be a considerable amount as I ended up paying almost an additional 2 grand in Florida state sales tax on a private party sale.
