Default Supercharger question

Since everyone says speeding on public roads is not cool, I was just wondering why some of you add a supercharger. Are you an avid racer and take it to the track ,do you take it to the drag strip, or do you just like the looks and the sound? Seems like a LOT of money if it is just for looks. Not flaming anyone here, just was curious. I like the car show part my self not realy into high speed.

im thinking that most of the people who say to street racing, all do it more than they like to admit. i think most of the guys with the high performance/supercharged cars do race on the street. also adding mods such as supercharger, or heads/cam brings a "WOW" factor to the car.

its a good question. and when you really think about it, we mod our cars to go faster. not everyone here races at the track, so where are we going faster?! i try to hit the track maybe once a month, but the added power to the car usually comes in handy on the streets!

Not really into high speed??? That's something I thought I'd never hear from a Corvette owner. Acceleration can be a fun rush which you can obtain without breaking the speed limit. There's also alot of people that take their vettes to the track or a drag strip. I've taken my baby up to 140 mph on a closed track at Pocono Raceway and I can tell you without a doubt that you haven't fully experienced what a vette can really do until you take it to a track. Hearing that engine at full throttle, taking tight curves at 40 mph which no normal family car could ever do and reaching speeds that some airplanes can't even match is a thrill every corvette owner should experience at least once. I can't wait to go back in the spring now that I have my new Kooks LT headers package. I thought she was fast before, yet you can never have enough HP. A supercharger would take my vette to yet another level of thrill!

Here is why I got mine.
Its not how fast it goes, it how fast it gets there.
Cool factor, sound, plus great torque. Also the fact of being able to white smoke the tires in any gear at will is a great feeling.
The biggest thing you have to learn is WITH GREAT POWER COMES GREAT RESPONSIBLITY.
People can and will abuse anything with or without a SC.

Something you hear about a lot on this site is called Permagrin. When i put the cam in my car, just sitting at a light listening to the car idle, or the people around me telling me it soungs good. Everytime i see Phils lingenfelter vette, and hear that magnasum, WOW I don't car if you going 30 or 300 that car is AMAZING.

I have a Talon TSi with a few mods on it, I really enjoy driving the car, the turbo and BOV make it that much more fun to drive, and it's not even all that fast.

<edit> But don't get me wrong, i did it for the performance, i go to the track and the drag strip, and occasionally run it on empty roads.

I hope you are going on here say on your comparison.

As I said I like to play from 0-fast(100) ,but I can do that stock. I guess if I was into the racing thing and had a spare $10,000 or so I would do it also, but to me that is a LOT of money .

Three reasons:

1> Acceleration, Acceleration, Acceleration

2> Knowing that you can be the perfect model citizen, cruise at 20mph and still be able to smoke anything that comes your way

3> PermaGrin(TM)

Now - you do not have to add a blower to do these 3 things.

For number 1 - if you swap in 4.11:1 gears and a high stall TC (if you have a A4), you have a stoplight killer in the making. Add a very loud exhaust, headers, wild lumpy cam and intake and you will *sound* like 800rwhp, even if you are not.

For number 2 - you need to look towards a 427 big block, twin turbos, etc. Now you're into astronomical money, I mean obscene amounts of loot, a truly profane amount of cash. Only then can you rest on your laurels and think "I'm making over 1000bhp at the flywheel - no one can touch me - if I could just get it to hook!!"

And for number 3? Just buy a stock C5 and drive it like you stole it.

Nothing but grins.

EG

P.S. I have a ATI Procharger because I never grew up

Did mine for the "bling" factor. Not really into 11 sec 1/4 mile times. It is the "wow" factor at car shows, that I like. Don't get me wrong, like the speed and power, BUT, my huyabussa would leave the vette in the dust.

Because it takes a car that is fun to drive and makes it even more fun to drive.

If you obey the law and not into "hi speed", then why did you buy $50,000 Hi performance, Hi horse power, 178 mph sports car when you can buy a 4 banger for $14,000 and still go 100mph. Going by your logic why buy a Vette unless your going to race it, everyone here has broken a traffic law from time to time whether going a few extra miles over the speed limit or doing a hole shot at a light. Some people are happy with 90hp some with 350hp and some like myself that need a little more. Why more, so when a stock vette pulls along side they won't have a chance even if its a c6, lets be honest you bought your vette for what it is, Hi performance, Hi horse power and FAST. Enjoy it..........

Do you recall the guy who got ticketed for doing 101 in a 55??? Does he realize he was coming down from 140???? I think he was testing out some enhancements that he had recently added to his car.....
I forgot the guys name... do you recall that??????

Ah, I like the point that adding a S/C gets you to that "cruising speed" that much quicker.

I'm an owner of SIRI and am up over 55% in the last two weeks...I can smell that addition of a S/C and heads/cam package in the next couple of months if this pace continues

First thing, I did not pay 50k for mine, I bought it used. So ,you can not like or love a car and drive it without going 178mph??? I remember when Little Joe Cartright advertised the 63 corvette and I said I would own one of these one day. Well I have had 3 of them and did not remember signing anything that said I had to drive it FAST!! I own a 4x 4 also and I am like 99% of the other 4x4 owners,, I do not do off road either,so I guess I should not have one I like my vert for the car and the fact that you or I can drive them like we want to.My first point was if you had that kind of money to spend on looks, it must be nice .When you are retired like myself most of us can't do it.

And I am not trying to flame you, but your logic seems a little flawed to me. Perhaps I am misunderstanding you a little.

You said "I like the show car part" - so it's OK if someone drops say - $3500 on wheels and tires, and say - $6000 on custom paint, or underhood chrome or whatever - but NOT OK if I spend say - $8000 on performance modifications?

In the same way that you would not buy a supercharger, I would NEVER buy chrome wheels. Everybody's different, that's what makes owning a Vette so much fun.

My supercharger is a centrifugal type and not polished - so it looks more like a big air conditioning unit than a chrome Roots supercharger that some do install for show (and go). But don't get me wrong - they look truly awesome - and very

In my Corvette Club, they like my car because it is all black with zero bling, it is loud and it goes extremely fast. Everyone else in the club, with a few exceptions, is retired (I'm 41) or just quietly enjoying their Corvettes. Many have more than one generation Vette. But we still have a lot in common - we all love and obsess over our Corvettes.

Isn't that the essense of Corvette ownership? Why does it matter if I want to travel at warp speed and you wish to cruise at low speed?

What should matter is that we absolutely adore our cars.

Different strokes for different strokes. That's what makes the world interesting.

Show does it for you.

Go does it for me.

Peace.

EG
