Default Battery

Went to check the green eye on my 00, shined with a flashlight, none there, just black. Info on the battery advises charge before checking if black. If yellow, bad battery. What's up? Car starts, everything works, is it time for a new battery? I am presuming that its a original battery, has the side mounts and is the Delco 6 year. Any input would be greatful. Car has 29,000 on it, but I'm sure its the years not the miles. Thanks.

WOW, GET THAT BATTERY OUT OF THE CAR!

Ok, as far as your reading i can give you no advise. Thanks to the GM engineering, your acid batter which is prone to leak near the side mounts, is right over your wiring harness. So replace your battery still good or not with a gel battery and never worry about it again.

Hey Stangkiller, Is the Optima Red top, a gel fill? Also, when you go to a top mount, does it require different cables? The positive looks like its long enough, but I don't know about the neg unless its tucked up somewhere. I don't see any acid leaks anywhere and the mounts look very clean and dry including the case.

Optima batteries are AGM (absorded gas mat) a.k.a gel filled. Their claim to fame is that they can even be mounted upside down and they won't spill. I'm not suggesting that, use the stock position to mount it!

The Optima batteries have the top terminals AND the side terminals. The RedTop 75/35 is a perfect fit for the C5. It's 720 cold cranking amps, which is more than the stocker's 600 CCA.

Costco has them all the time for $99.95 and it is a direct drop in. Optima also makes a 34/78 which also fits, (a little bigger), has the side and top terminals and is 800 CCA.

Optima makes a Yellow Top as well which is considered a "deep discharge" battery - generally used if you have aftermarket stereo equipment. But for the everyday starting application, you can't go wrong with the Red Top!

Get rid of that leaky P.O.S. before something bad happens!

Dolen again. On the Optima Red top mount, any change of the cables needed? Also being from Wis. Red or yellow?

I am running the Red Top as well, and it bolted right in.

The red top is a starting battery, that is what you want.

All Optimas come with both side and top terminals. Just use the side terminals...the factory cables bolt right up no problem.

I too would advise switching the battery out. Get the Red Top and forget about it.

I have heard that the "eye" is only powered by one of the battery cells, and can be misleading on the charge of your battery. I would get an Optima, and save yourself the grief and the possible damage.

Three to five years max on a battery and change it. Save yourself a lot of grief and other repairs. The alternator suffers trying to keep a degrading battery up to snuff.
