Over the summer my wife bought me the new passport 8500 X50 radar detector, and not once driving around the Chicagoland area did I ever get a lazer warning. Well yesterday just outside of Oshkosh, WI I got "painted". Thankfully I was not speeding, and to my surprise the detector went off, even though I was in a group of cars (I was the farthest from where the cop was parked). In the past I have heard that if you receive a lazer warning, you are pretty much cooked, due to the fact that for the detector to even pick up the lazer it has to be pointed right at your car. Is this true, because after my first encounter, the lazer had to be pointed at another vehicle in the group I was traveling with.

Anyway, the noise scared the crap out of me.
not always, sometimes you can get a lazer bounce or since you were saying you were at the rear perhaps he hit the lead car's windshield and it went through.
The reason that you're cooked usually is because it's not like radar where you'll pick up residual waves bouncing around corners, over hills, etc... So your ability to slow down after laser notification to avoid detection is ZERO.

You don't have much chance if hit with the laser, good luck !
Interesting thread.
I got a laser hit on my new detector last summer on a secondary highway in northern Texas. I was running (too fast) and alone on the road. I quickly hit my brakes. No sirens - No Flashing Lights? Didn't ever see the source but I figure I just caught a break, or a one time only detector fault!!!!!!!!!!!
The laser detectors can be falsed by sunlight as well. This may not be the case for ya'll but I have had the Blinder M-10 and Passport Solo2 start buzzing at the same time just sitting in a parking lot facing the sun in the morning.
Note: I don't know if the Cheese-heads have Lasers yet(correct me if I'm wrong). The Lasers are very expensive. I found that Wisconsin cops had antiquated tech. and are lazy when timing. Typically they just sit with the radar gun on and hope to catch someone. Kinda like catfishing. You toss the line out at night and collect the fish in the morning. Eventually they will catch some dufus driving 90mph. Besides, they can't eat and trigger the gun at the same time. And one final note. When they chase you down and as he gets close, toss a dounut out the window. That will buy you some time to escape.

Since you were "just outside of Oshkosh", you may have been near their airport. I have an Escort Solo S2 and my Laser detection goes off everytime I drive by the Indianapolis International Airport. One of their instrument landing systems paints me each time. In the 14 months I have had the detector I have only gotten the Laser indication one other time away from Indy and it was in the Atlanta area.
